Migrant women in tend to work in less visible sectors, increasing risks and vulnerability to protection incidents such as gender-based violence.

🔹 There is less diversity in sectors available to women migrant job seekers, and the most common sectors of employment for women respondents were domestic work and work in a café/restaurant.

🔹 Women, whose level of education was generally higher than men, more often reported taking a job with a lower education requirement than what they possessed.

🔹 1 in 3 women respondents who earned money reported experiencing sexual exploitation or abuse in the workplace in Libya.

Job opportunities available for migrants in Libya have precarious working conditions, lacking formality, stability, security and social protections.

🔸 66% of respondents reported wage theft or not being paid on time, and 39% reported that they did not receive payment at all.

🔸 Only 20% of respondents were able to cover their needs while in Libya, and only 15% were able to save money.

Migrants' decision to migrate to is influenced by job opportunities and attractive wages, but harsh working and living conditions and an unstable labor market tend to disappoint their expectations.

🔹 77% of our respondents made money while in Libya, and 61% of this group were able to find a job within one month of arriving in the country.

🔹 Two-thirds secured employment with the assistance of co-national networks or other migrants.

🔹The majority had received information about job opportunities in the Libyan labour market prior to their departure, mostly from relatives or friends currently (39%) or previously (41%) in Libya.

🔸 92% of our migrant respondents who earned money in did not have a formal employment contract.

🔸76% of our respondents were primarily making money through casual or occasional work.

📝 Our research examining the economic situation of migrants in shows that economic factors play a crucial role in their decision-making.

🔹77% of our respondents cited economic reasons as a primary reason for leaving their country of origin, interplaying with other factors such as violence, insecurity and conflict (41%), and a prevailing culture of (39%).

🔹More than half of respondents decided to stop in Libya for work to finance their onward journey.

🔹78% of all respondents stated that they selected their intended destination because they anticipated finding better economic opportunities and/or generally experiencing a higher standard of living (65%) there.

📝 Our new paper explores the realities and needs of migrant children and in West and North Africa. The study is based on a quantitative analysis through interviews with youth and migrants traveling with children in Bamako, Conakry, Niamey and Tunis.

Key findings include:
🏫 Access to education for migrant children in the four cities of interview is limited
💭 Educational aspirations only play a minor role in migration decision-making among youth respondents compared to economic factors
👩‍👦‍👦 Access to formal or informal education is the most frequent need expressed by caregivers for the children in their care (29%)
🎓 The probability of using regular migration pathways rises with higher education levels.

Access to trustworthy information for in the is crucial for their decision-making while on the move. This 🆕 snapshot explores information gaps, how information is accessed, and the sources of information most relied upon and trusted by migrants in the region.

Key findings include:
ℹ️ The majority of respondents (61%) experienced information gaps, either before and/or during their journey.
💰 Amongst respondents who reported information gaps and used a smuggler, almost half (49%) indicated challenges in obtaining costs-related information.
👪 Family and friends in another country are the most often cited source of information by surveyed migrants who obtained information before their journey (71%), whereas 58% cited this source of information during the journey.
