From discussions in the conference room to learning in the forest 🌿

We concluded the 2026 with a field trip to Istanbul’s Atatürk Arboretum and Belgrade Forest - a fitting end to several days of exchange on sustainable forest management.

It was a pleasure to discover the rich variety of tree and plant species found in the area, guided by forestry students who shared insights into the different species, the history of the arboretum, and its important role in forest education and research.

We gained first-hand insights into forest fire monitoring systems from a fire watching tower, while taking in stunning views over the Bosphorus.

A big thank you to PEFC Türkiye for organising this insightful field trip! 👏🌳

From forest certification and digital traceability to medicinal plants and forest-based innovation, several speakers at last week’s in Istanbul highlighted the many ways forests contribute to sustainable development. 🌲

🌍 Panel 3 focused on Türkiye’s progress towards certification and what this milestone could mean for the country’s forest sector, international credibility and long-term sustainable growth.

Discussions highlighted the expansion of forest certification across , the role of digital monitoring and traceability systems, and the importance of sustainable forest management for international markets.

🍯 Panel 4 explored the potential of non-timber forest products, from medicinal plants and honey to natural oils, mushrooms and cork.

Speakers discussed Türkiye’s rich biodiversity and export potential, opportunities for higher value-added products and innovation, and how sustainable forest-based value chains can support rural livelihoods and biodiversity conservation.

The discussions highlighted the growing role of forests not only as ecosystems to protect, but also as a foundation for sustainable economic development and innovation.

Thank you to all speakers and moderators for the inspiring discussions! 🙌

Last week’s in Istanbul brought together PEFC members, forestry professionals and stakeholders from 40 countries. 🌲

During four panel discussions, speakers explored the future of sustainable forest management, resilient forests and timber construction in a changing climate.

🏗️ Panel 1 focused on how timber construction can support low-carbon development and resilient infrastructure, particularly in earthquake-prone regions such as Türkiye.

Speakers highlighted timber’s advantages as a lightweight, high-performance building material, innovation in modern timber architecture, and the growing role of in verifying responsible sourcing across projects. 🪵

🌳 Panel 2 explored how sustainable forest management and certification can help forests adapt to climate change, drought, pests and increasing wildfire risks.

Key themes included adaptive forest management, biodiversity protection, forest monitoring, wildfire prevention and restoration, and the connection between resilient forests and resilient communities. 🌱

Together, the discussions highlighted how the future of resilient construction is closely connected to the future of resilient forests, and why sustainable forest management and innovation must go hand in hand.

Thank you to all speakers and moderators for the inspiring discussions! 👏

As forests become increasingly central to climate strategies, biodiversity goals and investment decisions, one question is becoming more important than ever:

➡️ How do we ensure that forest-related metrics lead to meaningful, long-term sustainability outcomes, not just better reporting?

At the Corporate Investments into Forestry & Biodiversity Europe conference, we joined experts from across finance, data and forest management to discuss the growing role of forest metrics in decision-making.

The discussion highlighted an important reality: while metrics can make forests more visible within financial and policy frameworks, they must remain connected to the systems that shape responsible forest management on the ground.

As our Head of Advocacy, Thorsten Arndt, noted during the panel: “the question is not whether we can measure forests, but whether those measurements lead to systemic change.”

Forest certification already provides the governance, verification and long-term management framework needed to support credible sustainability outcomes. The opportunity now is to strengthen the connection between certification and the growing demand for decision-useful forest data.

Because ultimately, the goal is not better metrics. It is better outcomes for forests, people and climate. 🌲

What a week! 🌍

The 2026 has concluded, bringing together members and stakeholders in Istanbul for a week of inspiring discussions and exchange.

The event came at an important moment for Türkiye as it moves towards its first Sustainable Forest Management certifications.

Under the theme “Unlocking Türkiye’s Forest Potential: Sustainable Innovation with PEFC Certification,” participants explored how certification can support resilient forests, responsible supply chains, and new market opportunities.

Throughout the week, we heard engaging presentations and discussions on sustainable timber construction, climate adaptation, forest resilience, non-timber forest products, and the role of certification in supporting sustainable development.

We were delighted to welcome The Navigator Company and Sumitomo Forestry as new international stakeholder members, and to see the PEFC Project Sourcing Standard approved by the General Assembly.

A big thank you to our host, PEFC Türkiye, and to all speakers, participants, sponsors, and contributors who made this year’s Forest Forum a success! 💚🌳
