Five years at the heart of the EU forest sector! 🌳

This year marks five years since International moved its EU Affairs office to the European Forestry House in Brussels.

Sharing a home with CEPF, EUSTAFOR and the Forest-based Sector Technology Platform (FTP) has created valuable opportunities for collaboration, exchange and stronger connections across the European forest sector. 🤝

A lot has changed since 2021. As EU policies increasingly affect forests and forest-based value chains, our EU Affairs team has grown, strengthening PEFC's engagement in policy discussions on sustainable forest management, deforestation, biodiversity, traceability and responsible sourcing.

Through our participation in European Commission expert groups and stakeholder platforms, we contribute our expertise and highlight how voluntary third-party certification can support policy objectives and their practical implementation.

As we mark this milestone, we thank our partners and colleagues for five years of collaboration at the European Forestry House. We look forward to continuing our work together!

Restoring forests is only the beginning. 🌳

How do we ensure that the benefits of forest restoration last for generations?

At the 28th Session of the FAO Committee on Forestry ( ) in Rome, our Head of Advocacy, Thorsten Arndt, highlighted the importance of connecting forest restoration with long-term sustainable forest management.

Restoring degraded forests and landscapes is essential for biodiversity, climate resilience and local communities. But the real measure of success is whether these benefits endure ten, twenty or fifty years from now.

This is where forest certification can play an important role. 🌱

By providing a framework for long-term management, biodiversity protection, stakeholder participation and continuous improvement, certification can help sustain the benefits of restoration over time.

As Thorsten emphasised, restoration and sustainable forest management should not be seen as separate agendas, but as part of the same goal: healthy, resilient forests that continue to deliver for nature and people. 🌲

🗨️"We would encourage FAO to make long-term stewardship an integral part of the restoration agenda, and to make greater use of sustainable forest management systems that already exist, including forest certification."

📢 PEFC has updated its Trademarks Rules to align with the EU Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition Directive ( ).

The amended PEFC ST 2001:2020, Second Edition, introduces clearer requirements for how trademarks and labels are used on products and in communications.

The changes aim to make it easier for consumers to understand what the PEFC trademarks mean, what they refer to and how they are backed by certification.

🔎 What are the key changes?

✔ Clearer requirements for off-product use of PEFC trademarks, including the PEFC initials
✔ A requirement to include the PEFC website address with PEFC labels, with limited exceptions
✔ Revised promotional messages and requirements for alternative label configurations
✔ Stronger requirements to clarify which products or activities PEFC trademarks refer to

Existing PEFC trademarks users have a two-year transition period, until 2 October 2028, to move to the revised requirements. However, companies communicating with EU consumers should already take the EmpCo requirements into account.

How can we unlock the potential of the forest-based bioeconomy? 🌳

Ensuring a sustainable supply of forest-based materials is essential. But supply alone will not drive the transition towards renewable alternatives.

At the 28th Session of the FAO Committee on Forestry ( ) in Rome, PEFC highlighted the importance of addressing both supply and demand.

Forest certification plays an important role by providing assurance that materials originate from sustainably managed forests and enabling traceability through supply chains. But scaling the forest-based bioeconomy also requires supportive policies, investment, market development and cross-sector collaboration.

One example is the Building for Forests Acceleration Plan, which brings together the forest and construction sectors to increase the use of sustainable wood in buildings while supporting positive outcomes for forests and the people who manage them. 🏗️

Because the goal is not simply to create more value from forests, but also more value for forests and the communities that depend on them. 🌲

The Certification Verification API enables organisations to connect procurement, sourcing and supplier-management systems directly to PEFC-certification information.

Instead of relying on manual certificate searches or stored information, organisations can integrate certification checks into the workflows where sourcing and supplier decisions are being made.

That’s why easy access to additional information matters.

has launched a new consumer information page, providing clear and accessible information about what the PEFC label means, what it covers and the certification behind it. 💻

The updated PEFC Trademarks Rules strengthen this connection by requiring a PEFC website address to accompany the label, with limited exceptions - giving consumers a direct route to find out more.

How should forest certification respond to advances in biotechnology? 🌳

During the International Board’s visit to Brazil, Board members and PEFC Brasil visited FuturaGene, Suzano’s biotechnology subsidiary, to explore this question through research and field experience.

The programme took us through laboratories, greenhouses and genetically modified eucalyptus field trials, offering insight into years of investment in forest biotechnology and climate-resilience research.

We recognise the importance of biotechnology acceptance to Brazil’s forestry industry. For PEFC, examining the evidence and engaging our members are essential foundations for considering potential acceptance and the safeguards it would require.
