Young people in Ethiopia are turning skills into income- with the right support.

Supported by the ILO’s Youth-to-Youth Fund, refugee and host community youth in Ethiopia are using business training and seed funding to launch enterprises and generate income.

Our latest story from Addis Ababa follows Regat and Semira, two young women whose journeys show how youth-led approaches can create decent work, strengthen livelihoods and build social cohesion.

📍 Sudan: Bridging the gap between humanitarian aid and decent work.

In Sudan's Kassala State, Shagarab refugee camp and surrounding host community areas

👨‍👨‍👧‍👧 92 households now have better and dignified shelter and living conditions, access to sanitation facilities, solar power for reliable access to energy for daily needs and small livelihoods, rainwater harvesting systems and improved water hygiene.

👷‍♂️ This construction created 300 short terms jobs for refugees and host community members- advancing inclusive labour opportunities in line with ILO’s standards and principles, including Recommendation 205 on employment and decent work for peace and resilience.

This practical example of integrated approaches to strengthening resilience, promoting decent work, and improving living conditions for vulnerable communities is funded by the Government of the Netherlands.

On this Labour Day, the ILO PROSPECTS project stands with both host communities and refugees, recognizing that access to decent work is essential to dignity, stability, and shared prosperity.

Guided by ILO Recommendation No. 205 on Employment and Decent Work for Peace and Resilience, we reaffirm that creating jobs and livelihoods in contexts of displacement is not only a humanitarian priority—it is a foundation for peace, social justice, and sustainable development.

Our approach is rooted in the ILO’s guiding principles:
🔹 Promoting inclusive labour markets that leave no one behind
🔹 Supporting rights at work and fair working conditions
🔹 Strengthening resilience through skills, enterprise development, and local economic opportunities
🔹 Fostering social dialogue among governments, employers, and workers

By supporting both refugees and host communities, PROSPECTS contributes to stronger, more cohesive societies where opportunity is shared and resilience is built together.

This Labour Day, we reaffirm our commitment to advancing decent work for all—because social justice begins with inclusion.

From awareness to action: strengthening safer farming through social dialogue 🌱

On 23 April, the National Organization of Trade Unions (NOTU) conducted a refresher session on Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) for soybean farmers in Isingiro district.

This group—comprising farmers from Nakivale refugee settlement and host communities—shared how the initial awareness training translated into tangible change. By organizing themselves into social welfare groups, they have been able to save collectively and invest in protective equipment, improving safety in their day-to-day farming activities.

The refresher session, led by Nicholas Businge (Programme Officer, NOTU), provided an opportunity to reflect on progress, exchange success stories, and address ongoing challenges in the soybean value chain.

Implemented in partnership with the International Labour Organization (ILO) and Ripple Effect under the PROSPECTS programme, this initiative highlights how working with social partners delivers sustainable impact on the ground—an important lesson as we look ahead to the regional Tripartite Conference.

📢 Apprenticeships are creating real pathways to decent work in Uganda’s hotel and tourism sector.

Through the PROSPECTS programme, young people—both refugees and host communities—are gaining practical skills across six in-demand occupations: Food & Beverage Service, Front Office, Housekeeping & Laundry, Culinary Arts, Barista & Bartending, and Bakery & Pastry.

💼 The results are promising: over 80% of apprentices from the first two cohorts have successfully transitioned into employment.

A recent joint monitoring visit, led by in collaboration with Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development Uganda, and Hotel and Tourism Training College, is tracking the progress of the third cohort of 200 apprentices—helping ensure quality training and strong links to the labour market.

Investing in skills development is key to building inclusive labour markets and expanding opportunities for all.
