❤️ His heart left a mark on this world.

The global surgery community has lost a visionary leader, a steadfast advocate, and a friend. Dr. Dominique "Dom" Vervoort was a central figure in the movement to provide equitable surgical care worldwide in so many ways.

Behind the scenes, as one of our first advisors, he played an important role in the early development of the Global Surgery Foundation. His trusted advice, his sharp insights - and most importantly his unwavering belief in our mission - were deeply valued by our team and shaped our organisation from the beginning.

Dom’s spirit is woven into the DNA of the GSF.

Our team will always remember Dom for his boundless energy and the sheer speed with which he moved through the world. Whether he was turning out papers and articles in record time, tirelessly live-tweeting from our WHA side events, or running 77km heart around Geneva to raise funds for children with congenital heart disease, he continuously inspired us.

Dom's heart left a mark on this world far greater than his far-too-short time here would suggest.

We are profoundly grateful for the time we had with him. While Dom will be deeply missed, his influence continues to inspire our team and the entire global surgery community.

Continuing Dom’s Legacy

In honor of Dom’s final wishes, a GoFundMe page has been established to assist his family with the significant costs of bringing him home from Canada to Belgium for burial. Any funds raised beyond these immediate expenses will support a Memorial Fund dedicated to continuing the global surgery efforts he devoted his life to.

If you would like to support Dom’s family and help ensure his visionary work continues, please consider making a contribution here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/dominique-dom-vervoort (link in Bio and Story).

Rest in peace, Dom.

You cannot achieve Universal Health Coverage without surgery.

That is why the Global Surgery Foundation is thrilled to welcome Mr. Nikhil Seth to our Board. As a key negotiator for the hashtag , Mr. Seth understands that health systems are only resilient when they can provide surgical care.

"Surgical care is a fundamental matter of equity and social justice," says fellow Board member Dr. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka.

Board President, Prof Rifat Atun, added "Mr. Seth's leadership will be instrumental as we scale our efforts to support governments in building resilient, surgically capable health systems.

With Mr. Seth’s guidance, we are scaling our efforts to support governments in building surgically capable health systems. This comes at a critical time—surgical conditions currently account for nearly one-third of the global disease burden but financing has not kept pace.

Join us in welcoming Nikhil Seth to the GSF team!

🇳🇵 Strengthening safe surgery for mothers and newborns in Nepal.

This week, the GSF team returns to Nepal for the second mission of the hashtag project, “Saving Lives of Mothers and Newborns in Nepal: Optimizing Safe Surgical Care.”

In partnership with the Nepal Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (NESOG), the team is delivering advanced leadership and mentorship training — equipping skilled mentors through a blend of theory, simulation, and hands-on coaching.

By building local capacity and a sustainable hub-and-spoke mentorship model, this initiative aims to make safe, high-quality surgical and obstetric care accessible to every mother and newborn across the province.

Through these activities, GSF and NESOG continue to work toward safer, more effective surgical and obstetric care for mothers and newborns across the Province.

This initiative is supported by hashtag and the Else Kröner-Fresenius-Stiftung.

This collaboration ensures that critical, field-tested knowledge — from anaesthesia in war to nursing care and surgical management of weapon injuries — is accessible to those who need it most.

🎯 Reaching 100,000 surgical healthcare workers

Advancing safe surgery starts with empowering those who deliver it.

That’s why we’ve set a bold new goal: to reach 100,000 surgical healthcare workers by the end of 2026 through SURGhub.

To help achieve it, the Global Surgery Foundation has launched the SURGhub Ambassador Programme — a global initiative to accelerate access to high-quality surgical training worldwide.

Through this growing network, Ambassadors will expand SURGhub’s reach, ensuring that knowledge, skills, and opportunities to learn are available where they’re needed most.

A heartfelt thank you to our inaugural group of Ambassadors, whose dedication and enthusiasm helped shape and launch this programme.
