Human Change is a global advocacy campaign founded by Margarita Louis-Dreyfus, in her personal capacity.

Protecting children from harmful technologies that contribute to the screen-addiction and loneliness epidemic, and to build a more meaningful childhood for generations to come. Human Change is a coalition of parents, advocates, educators, psychologists, paediatricians, clinicians, and researchers who are raising the alarm about the dangers of digital devices and social media to children’s health and development. Launching at the World Economic Forum in Davos 2024, The Human Change House hosted a series of 12 powerful panel discussions. These sessions brought together international experts in psychology, medicine, business, government and more to debate the issues and solutions around how social media and digitalisation are changing children, how they will impact future society, among other crucial topics.

Summer might be heading into its final week, but July kept us all busy when it comes to news around AI, tech and childhood. Here are our main takeaways:
☀️Learnings from first-ever UN Global Dialogue on AI Governance.
UN Secretary General António Guterres announces the UN AI Child Safety Pledge, a framework to keep children safe from AI, at the first-ever UN Global Dialogue on AI. Off the back of this, the Coalition for Children’s Rights and Protection in the Age of Artificial Intelligence was launched, bringing together governments, UN agencies, tech companies, civil society groups, educators, and child welfare experts to help ensure the AI future we’re building is one we want our children to inherit.
☀️ AI for Good Summit
We had a great time attending the AI for Good Summit, where our ask was simple: anthropomorphic AI systems, like companions and chatbots designed to foster emotional dependency, should be limited to adults only.
☀️ Social media bans keep making headlines. But as more countries push for bans, the real question is whether a ban alone is enough to bring back human-centred childhood.
☀️ A People-First Chatbot Bill aimed at addressing AI chatbot harms has been introduced to the House.

Busy week for us at Human Change Foundation as we’re in Geneva for the UN Global Dialogue for AI and the summit.

Over the past two days, we joined the UN Global Dialogue for AI where the conversation on AI risks to children started shifting from principle to action. The UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, called for an AI child safety pledge in his opening remarks, and we’re happy to see the conversation progressing to actionable steps and policy.

We are now over halfway through an exciting week, hearing from experts on how we can protect children and teens from AI harm and ensure that big tech keeps kids’ developmental needs at the centre. We also look forward to the lunch we are hosting at AI for Good summit on Friday, more on that later!

Anthropomorphic AI or human-like AI in the form of AI companions and chatbots is evolving rapidly, and with it, the line between human and machine is becoming harder to distinguish.

For children, this is particularly concerning: the more human AI feels, the easier it becomes to form emotional attachments to it, at the expense of real, meaningful human connection.

To tackle a problem, you first have to understand it. Over the next few months, Human Change Foundation is bringing together its coalition of experts behind our ”Beware of Artificial Intimacy” campaign to raise awareness of the impact Anthropomorphic AI has on children’s development and what we can do about it. We will be diving deep into the risks and come up with solutions that elevate children’s capabilities, rather than diminish them.

6 in 10 children in the UK are using AI for their homework. As children become more reliant on Large Language Models to support their homework, parents need to be careful to monitor how, and how often, their kids use them.
