Am Pchum Ben Fest gedenkt Kambodscha seiner Ahnen. Der Tisch füllt sich dann mit allem, was die Familien gerne essen. Fleisch und Wurst kommt dann auch aus unserer Metzgerei auf dem Smiling Gecko Campus. Sehr lecker. (Und hoffentlich eine kleine Einnahmequelle für uns.)

Monday was World Teachers' Day, and Houn Veat is one of ours. For six years, he has taught Khmer literature in our primary school. Before that, he worked in an orphanage near Ta Kmao City. With us, he received teacher training and learned primary school methodology. This year, he also completed his Bachelor's degree in Literature.

Everything he learns, he passes on to our children, day after day. And his dream goes further: Houn Veat wants to open his own school in the community he comes from.

Thank you, Houn Veat. And please, take your time fulfilling that dream.

Every 5 October, UNESCO marks World Teachers' Day.

At Smiling Gecko, our teachers do more than teach lessons. They open doors: to a first job, a first dream, a future many of their students' parents never had a chance at.
Every child who learns to read, count or ask a good question owes it to someone who stood in front of a classroom and believed in them.

To our teachers: thank you.

Sreyhim is 26 and has been working at Smiling Gecko for nine years. Before that, she worked on a farm, cutting morning glory. Today, she is part of our service team, and she knows exactly where she wants to go next. What her dream is, she tells you herself in the video.

Her next chapter? She's already brewing it.

Our students from Grade 1 to Grade 3 sing the Cambodian national anthem. The whole anthem. By heart.

It is long, and every child knows every word. This is how well they learn at our school, and you can hear it in every line.
