In partnership with Namah Ropes, the UIAA is encouraging climbers to build good gear management habits for long-term safety.

🧗‍♂️ Choosing wisely
Climbing gear is life-saving equipment and not all products are created equal. Take time to understand what you’re buying, what it’s designed for, and whether it meets UIAA Safety Standards

🔍 Knowing your source
Buy climbing equipment from trusted manufacturers and reputable retailers. Reliable gear starts with reliable information, testing, and quality control.

📒 Record and review
Keep track of your climbing gear: usage, falls, wear, and age all affect performance. Regular checks help you spot damage early and make informed decisions about retirement.

Why speed is not always safety in the mountains ...

Falls by climbers are by far the most frequent type of accidents in alpine mountains, if we go by the number of accident reports submitted to the SERAC database in France.

Falls are frequently caused by loose rock and failing handholds. A recently published analysis of two such accounts in the SERAC database show that the climbers’ desire for swift progress is a key causal factor, combined with a degree of overconfidence on comparatively easy ground and somewhat inadequate communication between the climbers.

The analysis, written by the mountain guide and accidentologist Maud Vanpoulle in collaboration with the Petzl Foundation and Camptocamp, takes a closer look at two different accidents in the French Alps. Both accidents happened on steep mountain ridges, one to a climber who had consciously decided not to use the rope, and the other one to a roped-up climber on poor protection.

Kalymnos is one of the world’s great sport climbing destinations. Keeping its routes safe for future generations depends on high-quality bolting and rebolting practices.

The UIAA's rebolting initiatives on Kalymnos this May brought together climbers, bolters and safety experts to share knowledge on anchor safety, corrosion and sustainable route maintenance.

A number of UIAA member federations have established systems to collect data about accidents. Their approaches vary, from gathering of individuals stories for publication, through data collection by online reporting forms to general statistics compiled by the rescue services. Some efforts are community-driven, some organised by climbing federations, and some by public services. Altogether a substantial amount of data is being collected and often put to good use for the benefit of climbing safety, but there is no uniform way of doing it.

The UIAA has brought together data and knowledge from the national systems that exist, and created an international database ↓

Secure rock anchors are fundamental to safe climbing. In recent years, conversations around rebolting, stress corrosion, bolting ethics and route safety have become more fervent and widespread.

A year ago, the UIAA Safety Commission, a voluntary body dedicated to developing international safety standards for a wide range of climbing gear and equipment, including rock anchors, was invited by local authorities in Kalymnos, Greece to host an inspection and a bolting workshop as part of its annual safety meetings. These took place in early May 2026.

The UIAA and Climbers Against Cancer (CAC), a not-for-profit charity that raises awareness and funds for cancer research through the worldwide climbing community, have commemorated their long-term partnership through the creation of a collaborative t-shirt. The t-shirt (options in white and grey) is available to buy worldwide from the CAC online shop (Europe, UK/Rest of the World) . All proceeds will go directly to supporting CAC.

At the recent World Congress on Mountain Medicine in Hathersage, UK - the UIAA and CAC launched a pop up stall to sell the t-shirts and promote awareness about the collaboration.

Only 1 month to go until the IWG Global Summit on Women & Sport in Birmingham, UK.

This is not just another conference.

Held every four years, the IWG Global Summit brings together people shaping the future of women and girls in and through sport from every continent and every level of the sporting system.

This year’s theme, Beyond the Breakthrough, is about lasting progress, not isolated success stories. It asks how ideas, policies and programmes can be embedded, adapted and sustained so progress cannot be turned back.

From Olympic leaders and federation CEOs to researchers, policymakers, practitioners and innovators, the calibre of both the speakers and delegates is exceptional.
