The World Jewellery Confederation, or CIBJO (Confédération International de la Bijouterie, Joaillerie, Orfèvrerie des Diamants, Perles et Pierres), is the primary international jewellery, gemstones and precious metals association, representing the interests of all individuals, organisations and companies earning their livelihoods from the mining, processing, manufacturing and trade of these products. It is the oldest such organisation, having originally been established in 1926. The Confederation covers the entire jewellery, gemstone and precious metals sectors – vertically, from mine to marketplace, and horizontally within each of the component parts in the various production, manufacturing and trading centres. Its members are not individuals, but rather representative associations or commercial bodies. They include national and international trade organisations from more than 45 countries around the world and many of the international jewellery sector’s leading corporations and service providers. The Confederation is also the only organisation in the international diamond, gemstone and jewellery sectors to have received official consultative status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations. This enables it to advance programmes and goals of the UN within the industry, serving as a technical expert, adviser and consultant to governments and the UN Secretariat. It additionally is a member of the UN Global Compact and is committed to the fulfilment of the Sustainable Development Goals.

A new milestone for opal terminology and transparency✨

At the 2026 CIBJO Centenary Congress in Vicenza, the CIBJO Coloured Stone Commission presented its newly released Opal Guide, covering the wide variety of opal types and origins found around the world.

Charles Abouchar, President of the Coloured Stone Commission, highlighted the importance of agreed definitions and consistent terminology, including the continued use of the term “synthetic” for gemstones that are not natural. The guide also reflects opal sources ranging from Australia and Ethiopia to lesser-known deposits such as Bulgaria.

Damien Cody, President of the International Colored Gemstone Association, also recognised the contributors who helped bring the updated guide together.

At the 2026 CIBJO Centenary Congress in Vicenza, Dominique Dubugnon and Yann Caloz of the Fédération Horlogère presented how the Swiss watch industry is working to raise standards across its gemstone supply chain.

Their presentation explored why watchmaking treats gemstones as precision components, the importance of traceability from mine to watchmaker, and the need for greater transparency, accountability and product assurance throughout the supply chain.

With Swiss brands placing strong emphasis on reliability and consumer confidence, the message was clear: better information and stronger standards are key to building trust. ✨

The natural diamond market took centre stage at the CIBJO Congress, with a wide-ranging discussion on supply, pricing, marketing and consumer confidence. 💎

Industry journalist Rob Bates, analyst Avi Krawitz and analyst Edahn Golan - the trio behind The Diamond Dudes podcast, discussed how reductions in rough diamond supply are helping support natural diamond prices, alongside the changing mood of consumers and the importance of clear terminology around synthetic diamonds.

They were joined in the conversation by CIBJO President Gaetano Cavalieri, Mehul Shah of the World Federation of Diamond Bourses, Raluca Anghel of the Natural Diamond Council, Raj Mehta of Spectrum and Mahiar Borhanjoo of De Beers.

The discussion touched on everything from the social impact of reduced mining output and the livelihoods supported by the diamond industry, to the rapid growth of India’s jewellery market, competition from other luxury experiences and the need for stronger, more effective marketing of natural diamonds.

A broad conversation, but with one clear message: the future of natural diamonds depends not only on supply and pricing, but also on trust, storytelling and the value the industry creates for people and communities around the world.

At the 2026 CIBJO Centenary Congress, the Fei Cui Working Group presented CIBJO’s updated Jade Guide, created to harmonise terminology, standards and understanding between Eastern and Western markets.

The session was chaired by Ken Wong, with contributions from Kenneth Scarratt, Charles Abouchar, Su Jun and Professor Edward Liu, highlighting the importance of common language, laboratory consistency and consumer confidence.

A guide designed not to market jade, but to help the industry understand it better.

Artisanal and small-scale mining plays a vital role in the global jewellery supply chain, particularly in coloured gemstones and gold, but unlocking its full potential requires greater formalisation, traceability and access to markets.

At the 2026 CIBJO Centenary Congress in Vicenza, the discussion was moderated by Edward Johnson, Corporate Responsibility Director at Gemfields, and brought together James McQuilken, Norbert Massay of Moyo Gems and Pact Tanzania, Feriel Zerouki, Greg Valerio of Peace Gold, and Elizabeth Arnott of Mwamba Mining.

Together, they explored the opportunities and challenges facing the artisanal mining sector. From access to finance and responsible sourcing to traceability, market access and the need for stronger engagement across the jewellery value chain.

The message was clear: artisanal mining has real growth potential, but meaningful progress will depend on collaboration, formalisation and long-term industry commitment.

At the 2026 CIBJO Centenary Congress in Vicenza, industry leaders examined how war, sanctions, tariffs and precious-metal volatility are reshaping the global jewellery landscape. From the movement of rough diamonds to the rising cost of gold and silver, and the way manufacturers are adapting their products and strategies.

The discussion also highlighted the impact of G7 and EU sanctions on Russian-mined diamonds, the resilience of the coloured gemstone trade under U.S. tariffs, and the growing need for the industry to respond with agility, transparency and long-term thinking.

AI can help the jewellery industry move faster—but how do we ensure that human creativity, ethics and trust remain at its centre?

A joint session of CIBJO’s Ethics Commission and Technology Committee explored the legal, ethical and practical implications of artificial intelligence across the jewellery industry.

Moderated by Sara Yood and Stephane Fischler, the panel examined how AI is transforming design, manufacturing, marketing, retail and customer service - while raising important questions about intellectual property, accountability and overreliance on technology.

Jacques Voorhees highlighted AI’s potential to transform retail and create real-time digital conversations with customers. Paola De Luca encouraged companies to use AI strategically while continuing to value human craftsmanship and meaningful design.

Tzafrir Engelhart spoke about AI’s ability to accelerate and improve business operations, while Tai Wong explored its role in developing more efficient designs, marketing processes and precious-metal alloys.

The message was clear: AI offers extraordinary opportunities, but it must remain a tool that supports human creativity - not one that replaces independent thought, responsibility or trust.
