POW[D]ER — Artist Focus: Lucía Moure

For POW[D]ER, Lucía Moure presented Altar de coca, an installation exploring the ancestral knowledge and spiritual significance of the coca leaf.

Inspired by Andean cosmologies, the work forms a constellation of objects arranged according to the cardinal points. Brass, glass, and resin infused with coca and to***co powders bring ancestral substances into dialogue with contemporary materials.

The installation reflects on the coca leaf beyond its colonial reinterpretations—reopening its cultural, spiritual, and relational meanings.

POW[D]ER — Artist Focus: Pavel Aguilar

For the pop-up exhibition POW[D]ER, Pavel Aguilar explored the histories embedded in cacao through sound, rhythm, and moving image.
The Golden Rhythm (2025) combines two gilded donkey jawbones (quijadas) with a short video. The instrument—introduced to the Americas during colonisation—evokes the entanglement of labour, music, and colonial extraction, while its vibrating teeth transform memory into rhythm.

The series Sweet Trading I–VI (2025) uses chocolate and acrylic paint to translate Latin American sound frequencies into visual form, turning cacao into pigment, dust, and vibration.

The exhibition also included the video Pólvora / Braille (2018), expanding Aguilar’s exploration of sensory perception and historical memory.

POW[D]ER — Artist Focus: Nicolas Christol

For POW[D]ER, Nicolas Christol examined gunpowder as a material linked to colonial expansion, extraction, and violence.

Works from his series Transmutations (2025) were created through controlled explosions that deform silver containers, transforming them into brooches and rings referencing sting gr***de models.

During the event, Christol also performed a controlled explosion to create a new piece live at Bächlihof | L’Écurie. The resulting object materializes the force of the blast, translating destruction into a wearable form.

His work With Mercury Makes Mad (2025) further reflects on the toxic realities of gold extraction: a Swiss gold bar is ground into powder and sealed with mercury inside a glass tube.

POW[D]ER — A Sensorial Investigation of Colonial Narratives

Still in awe of the intense day we shared in Gstaad! 💥💙🏔️

For the second year parallel to Gstaad Art Week, art+château transformed the historic Bächlihof | L’Écurie into a one-day pop-up exhibition exploring cacao, gunpowder, and coca leaves — substances where sweetness, violence, ritual, and resistance intersect.

With powerful works by Pavel Aguilar, Nicolas Christol, and Lucía Moure, POW[D]ER invited visitors to rethink extraction, memory, and value — connecting Alpine tradition with global histories.

Introducing Nicolas Christol, part of Pow[d]er in Gstaad.

Born in 1982 in Morges and now based in Vevey, Christol began his practice in photography before expanding into installation and performance. His work critically examines overconsumption, state violence, and the logics of power—often through immersive, documentary-driven strategies. Since 2017, he has translated these concerns into the field of contemporary jewelry, treating it as a wearable image and a political surface.

In Pow[d]er, Christol presents works that condense these tensions into intimate yet charged objects, where adornment becomes a site of confrontation.

Co-founder of artist-run initiatives such as Einzweidrei and , he has long been committed to self-organised structures and independent exhibition formats.

We are proud to present his work in Gstaad!

Machtstrukturen – häufig in immersiven, dokumentarisch geprägten Setzungen.
