La bellezza della nostra laguna non è l'unico motivo per cui ci impegniamo a proteggerla. Le zone umide naturali sequestrano più carbonio di una foresta pluviale, mitigano i cambiamenti climatici, filtrano gli inquinanti presenti nell'acqua, aiutano a frenare le inondazioni e forniscono un habitat alla fauna selvatica. Sono l'ambiente naturale dei pescatori e la base del loro sostentamento. Senza di esse... tutto andrebbe perduto.
Il nostro lavoro può sembrare insignificante, le ore di volontariato necessarie per portare a termine il nostro lavoro possono sembrare inutili ad alcuni, ma ciò che conta è quanto ci sta a cuore lasciare un futuro vivibile alla prossima generazione. Poiché la legge lo consente, paghiamo i nostri pescatori SOS BARENA per il loro lavoro nel contesto del progetto Life Vimine dell’Università di Padova. Non si tratta di "approfittarne", ma semplicemente di buon senso. Il nostro obiettivo è una gestione a lungo termine, non vittorie a breve termine.
Ma i nostri pescatori RESPIRA BARENA sono volontari, poiché la legge non consente di retribuire le attività di pulizia. Anche tutto il nostro consiglio di amministrazione dona gratuitamente le proprie competenze e il proprio tempo per portare avanti i progetti.
Siamo un'organizzazione di base che si occupa con passione di conservazione, un tema che riguarda l'intero pianeta. Questo è il nostro tempo libero, il tempo che dedichiamo dopo il lavoro, il sabato e la domenica. Senza scusarci.

The beauty of our lagoon is not the only reason that we work to protect it. The natural wetlands sequester more carbon than a rainforest, mitigate climate change, filter pollutants in the water, help curb flooding and provide habitat to wildlife. They are the natural environment for the fishermen, and the foundation for their livelihoods. Without them… all that is lost.
Our work may seem insignificant, the hours of volunteer service required to bring our work to fruition may seem pointless to some, but it comes down to how much we care about leaving a liveable future for the next generation. Since the law allows, we pay our SOS BARENA fishermen for their hard work in the context of the University of Padua’s Life Vimine project. That isn’t “taking advantage”, that’s just good business. We aim for long-term stewardship, not short-term victories.
But our BREATHE BARENA fishermen are volunteers since the law does not allow cleanup efforts to be remunerated. Our entire administrative board also donates all their hours of expertise and time to get the projects running.
We are a grassroots organisation that is passionate about conservation - a topic that is relevant to the entire planet. This is our leisure, our free time after work, our Saturdays and Sundays. Unapologetically.
