What began as a simple conversation has turned into a beautiful space of connection, learning and empowerment. Together with social entrepreneurs Fatima Aitouknik and Fatima Ezzahra Draiss, a team from MANN+HUMMEL co-created a social enterprise that connects Moroccan women artisans with women travellers through stories, crafts and shared experiences.

When Dominik joined our 23rd Capability Program to Sri Lanka, he expected a challenging experience. What he didn’t expect? The depth of human connection, the power of co-creation, and the impact that can happen when you let go and trust the process.

“𝘐𝘧 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘥 𝘢𝘴𝘬𝘦𝘥 𝘮𝘦 𝘰𝘯 𝘚𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘺 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘸𝘦’𝘥 𝘭𝘢𝘶𝘯𝘤𝘩 𝘢 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭 𝘣𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘣𝘺 𝘍𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘢𝘺, 𝘐 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥’𝘷𝘦 𝘴𝘢𝘪𝘥 𝘯𝘰. 𝘉𝘶𝘵 𝘸𝘦 𝘥𝘪𝘥 𝘪𝘵 — 𝘵𝘰𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳, 𝘢𝘴 𝘢 𝘥𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘦 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘮, 𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘵 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘴𝘵.”

Dominik was moved by what he saw — especially in the Vedda community, where families face daily discrimination and poverty. But he stayed grounded in purpose:

As a participant in our 23rd Capability Program, Lisa spent a week in rural Sri Lanka co-creating a social enterprise to improve the livelihood of over 1,000 farming families.

What she found? A once-in-a-lifetime experience that deeply challenged and changed her — personally and professionally.

Lisa learned to trust the process, to let go of control, and to create in uncertainty — applying design thinking and business modeling to solve real-world challenges alongside a diverse, purpose-driven team.

As a participant in our 23rd Capability Program, Franziska spent an unforgettable week in Sri Lanka co-creating a social enterprise aimed at improving the livelihood of 1,000+ farming families.

Her biggest learning?

“𝘛𝘳𝘶𝘦 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘴 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘸𝘦 𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘯 𝘥𝘦𝘦𝘱𝘭𝘺, 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘰𝘰𝘵 𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦𝘴, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘰-𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘴𝘰𝘭𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘢𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘥.”

She was pushed far outside her comfort zone, especially when visiting the Vedha community — people living on the edge of survival. But it was exactly this encounter that brought clarity and focus:

“𝘐𝘵 𝘣𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘮𝘦 𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘺 𝘸𝘩𝘺. 𝘏𝘦𝘭𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘴. 𝘊𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘢𝘪𝘳𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴. 𝘔𝘢𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘢 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘩 𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨.”

Six weeks after their successful pitch to two private impact investors, 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘇𝗶𝘀𝗸𝗮’𝘀 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝟭𝟰 𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘀, putting their business plan into practice and making their vision for change a reality.

🌍 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗿𝗶 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗸𝗮: 𝗔 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸! 🚀

One week ago, a diverse team of 11 professionals arrived in Sri Lanka, joined by 5 local counterparts and social entrepreneur Yalini from a village on the East Coast. They didn’t come with ready-made solutions – instead, they stepped into the shoes of over 1,000 farming families to truly understand their needs.

Instead of pushing ideas, they listened. Instead of designing concepts, they co-created. And instead of planning from a distance, they acted. Together, they launched a new social enterprise with three Minimal Viable Products (MVPs):

🎓 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀
🚜 𝗠𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺
🍯 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗛𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘆 & 𝗣𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘂𝘁𝘀

On Friday, they presented their business to the villagers – securing 𝟰𝟲 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻-𝘂𝗽𝘀 and 𝗟𝗞𝗥 𝟲,𝟭𝟬𝟬 𝗶𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀. With just two months to test and refine, they are working hard to maximize impact and sales. The results will be pitched to impact investors on 𝗝𝘂𝗹𝘆 𝟵 to scale up the business.

What unites them is their shared vision:
✨ 𝗕𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟯𝟬, 𝗞𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗶 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝗮 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹, 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆.

What drives them is their collective purpose:

This experience is part of 𝗕𝗢𝗢𝗞𝗕𝗥𝗜𝗗𝗚𝗘'𝘀 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺, which develops the next generation of leaders while creating tangible impact. Together, we strive for a world where people not only care but also act.

🎉 We have a new president! After 10 years of voluntary service as President of our Foundation Board, Abdullah Rasheed handed over his reigns and welcomed Boris Billing as new President.

🚀 Rasheed has played an important role in our growth from one learning center in Mongolia towards a global platform for people and organizations to learn, grow and create impact. Under his leadership, our network grew to more than 1,000 next-generation leaders developed whilst co-creating 133 social enterprises in 16 countries. We cordially thank Rasheed for all his contributions in the past 10 years.

In our first action learning program in the Middle East in partnership with Cewas Middle East, a team of professionals co-created a mobile game to foster environmental protection. In this blog post, social entrepreneur Zaid from Jordan reflects about his learning journey in the program and provides insights in his work as a change maker in the region. Congratulations to five social entrepreneurs from our family for having been selected for this year's exchange program. They get the chance to share best practices with our family members in other countries. The exchange program is sponsored by donations made to our Foundation. BOOKBRIDGE covers the flight and all other costs are covered by the social entrepreneurs. We will open up applications for 2025 in September. Enjoy getting together and learning from each other!
