🌿 Today is the International Day for Biological Diversity — a global reminder that protecting ecosystems is essential for our shared future. Biodiversity underpins food, water, climate stability and human wellbeing.
🌍 We are only four years away from the 2030 SDG deadline, and progress is far too slow. Three‑quarters of land ecosystems and 66% of marine environments have already been significantly altered by human activity. Around 1 million species are now threatened with extinction.
📉 The UN Biodiversity Plan aims to restore 30% of degraded ecosystems and protect 30% of land, waters and seas by 2030. Today, we stand at only 17% of land and 8% of marine areas protected.
🌱 A positive example: Costa Rica has doubled its forest cover in three decades through restoration and strong environmental policy — proof that recovery is possible.
🔥 A negative example: The Amazon is approaching a tipping point where deforestation could shift vast areas into savannah, threatening global climate stability.
🤝 Biodiversity loss is not inevitable — it’s a choice. Learn, vote, support restoration, protect local ecosystems. Every action strengthens the web of life we depend on.
