We have collected enough money to fund the activities of Umucyo ART at Nakivale Refugee Settlement for the next 2 months. But our dreams are bigger. Umucyo ART has proven over the past 6 years how important a roleit plays in the lives of children who attend their art classes, be it music, painting, drawing, storytelling, dancing or singing. A large number of these children cannot attend school, their parents being unable to pays the schools fees.

If it was not for Umucyo ART and its welcoming atmosphere, they would be unoccupied all day long. This is the life of refugees in Uganda, the most welcoming country for refugees in Africa, if not in the whole world. If it was not for the Umucyo team, young volunteer artists who are struggling to make a living and believe in the power of art to lift spirits, the kids would be doing nothing all day long.

To become sustainable, Umucyo ART will launch an income generating activity in the coming months. Your support for this new phase of its rich existence will be needed. Please send the link around and encourage your friends and family members to contribute to this unique art school.

Young refugees in Uganda have nowhere to go. They will be living in the same settlement for years to come. Only a few of them will be able to attend school, primary and secondary. 0.01 % might make it to university.

It is extremely important to keep young refugees engaged in structured activities that help them cope with their extremely difficult circumstances.

Nous sommes heureux d'annoncer la conclusion d'un accord avec le Centre de développement communautaire Maanyi, dans les environs de la capitale Kampala, en Ouganda.

Sous la direction de notre ancienne collaboratrice (qui nous a bien épaulé pendant 15 mois, en établissant notre système de comptabilité à Kampala), Majorine Kyeswa, sa fondation (Maanyi) poursuivra le travail entrepris dans une école primaire du district de Luwero. Le projet « Du porridge à l'assiette », lancé au printemps dernier, sera étendu au cours des huit prochains mois. Lors de la première phase, qui s'est déroulée dans trois écoles, enseignants et élèves ont pu bénéficier d'une formation en agriculture durable pour apprendre à aménager et entretenir des potagers scolaires. L'école primaire Nakigoza ayant obtenu les meilleurs résultats parmi les 3 écoles participera seule à cette deuxième phase. Nous espérons que l'ensemble de ses 137 élèves pourront y prendre part cette fois-ci.

L'objectif du projet est de transmettre aux enfants des compétences précieuses et encore plus poussées en permaculture et de leur permettre de parfaire leurs connaissances sur les plantes et la nature, afin de contribuer à la préparation de repas nutritifs pour la cantine scolaire.

Les enfants qui ne mangent pas suffisamment à la maison avant d'aller à l'école le matin ont des difficultés scolaires. Par ailleurs, les nombreux parents qui n'ont pas les moyens de nourrir correctement leurs enfants hésitent à les scolariser : ils ne peuvent débourser les frais de scolarité (l'école publique n'est pas vraiment gratuite). Les enfants qui restent à la maison sont sollicités pour aider leurs parents à accomplir leurs tâches pour permettre à la famille de survivre.

Les jardins scolaires ne sont pas la panacée pour éradiquer la pauvreté, mais ils contribuent néanmoins au bien-être des enfants, tant psychique que physique, une alimentation saine et suffisante contribuant à leur réussite scolaire. Sans compter l'acquisition de compétences pratiques qui seront utiles pour relever les défis du changement climatique qui s'accentue d'année en année en Ouganda.

Dans cette deuxième phase du projet, les 48 enfants qui ont participé l'an dernier seront épaulés par d'autres camarades et enseignants. Ils joindront leurs forces afin d'agrandir le potager et d'accroître la production de légumes et de fruits frais. La culture de champignons sera également introduite, pour la consommation locale à l'école et à la maison, ainsi que pour générer des revenus pour l'école.

We are happy to announce that we have concluded an agreement with Maany Community Developement Centre in Kampala, Uganda.
Led by our ex-consultant and finance assistant, Majorine, Maanyi will be pursuing the work it has started at a primary school in the Luwero District. The project entitled "From Porridge to Tables" started early 2025 and will be expanded over the next 8 months.

During the first phase of the project, which involved three schools, the teachers and children received training in sustainable farming to develop their school gardens. The school that performed the best will be involved in this second phase. We hope that the 137 children who are enrolled in that school will be able to join.

The aim of the project is to equip children with valuable gardening skills and knowledge about plants and nature, that will contribute to the preparation of nutritious foods for their school lunch. Children who are not getting enough to eat at home before going to school in the morning do not perform well. Often, parents who do not have enough food to offer to their children are reluctant to send them to school: school fees are too expensive and children who stay at home can help their parents earn a living.

School gardens contribute to the well-being of children, to their performance in school and to the acquisition of skills that will help them face the challenges of climatic change in their adult lives.

In this second phase of the project, the 48 children who participated last year will be seconded by more of their classmates and their teachers, so that the surface of the garden can be expanded and more food produced. Mushroom cultivation will also be introduced, both for local consumption at school and at home, as well as to generate income for the school.

Notre campagne a très bien démarré. Cela nous fait chaud au coeur. Merci pour vos généreuses contributions. Quelque soit le montant versé, les enfants et les jeunes de l'école d'art Umucyo ART en profiteront. Crayons de couleur, matériel pour la fabrication de colliers, repas chauds, etc.

We have just launched a fundraising campaign on chuffed. Here below you will find a link for your donations. It is our first experiment with a platform, hoping to facilitate payments from supporters and friends of Care for Refugees from different parts of the world.

The money that we collect will be used to support our partner Umucyo ART. The organization led by young refugees in the Nakivale Refugee Settlement in Uganda has just gone through a difficult period of 9 months during which there was barely any funding. The number of children and adolescents beneficiaries of the art and crafts program was cut down to from 130 to 30.

The lack of money was not a reason to give up. Instead, Umucyo ART team members expanded their reach outside of the settlement. Umucyo was invited to a few events in the capital Kampala with the support of local NGOs and the refugee authority of the country. More exposure and recognition has not brought more oney though. So we are determined to fundraise harder to ensure their long-term sustainability and growth.

CAMPAGNE DE FINANCEMENT - UMUCYO ART OFFRE DU SOUTIEN ARTISTIQUE AUX ENFANTS RÉFUGIÉS

Nous venons tout juste de lancer une campagne de financement pour nos activités en Ouganda. Nous récoltons des fonds pour financer les activités de notre partenaire Umucyo ART. Les derniers mois ont été difficiles pour ces jeunes, mais ils n'ont pas baissé les bras. Ils ont été invités à faire connaître leur école dans la capitale Kampala, à donner des conférences, à montrer les réalisations des enfants et de leurs jeunes professeurs d'art. Toutefois, si Umucyo ART a gagné en notoriété et en sympathie, cela ne suffit pas pour rendre l'école viable, loin de là.

Notre appui vise à ce que l'école n'ait pas à vivoter de jour en jour. Avec votre aide, Umucyo pourra assurer aux jeunes professeurs bénévoles un soutien durable. Nous pourrons financer des activités génératrices de revenu comme une mini-ferme, augmenter le nombre de participants aux cours d'art et offrir davantage de repas équilibrés aux enfants du voisinage.

Pendant ce temps, les réfugiés continuent d'affluer dans les 14 camps que compte l'Ouganda, le pays étant entouré de voisins en guerre. Les conditions de vie se dégradent de jour en jour. L'accès à l'école est toujours aussi restreint, mais c'est aussi la nourriture qui vient à manquer. L'ONU n'est pas à même de couvrir plus de 18% des besoins des réfugiés en Ouganda.

Les services dispensés par Umucyo ART sont plus que jamais essentiels, l'art est un palliatif efficace et précieux contre le désoeuvrement, le découragement et souvent aussi pour atténuer des troubles psychiques comme la dépression et les troubles psychiques causés par la guerre sévissant dans les pays d'origine des enfants.
