Con grande dolore, dobbiamo annunciare la scomparsa di Massimo Danzi (1954-2026), studioso raffinato e amico caro con il quale, in anni di frequentazioni, è stato possibile imparare cosa significhi affrontare la vita, in tutte le sue manifestazioni, con spirito, intelligenza profonda, grandissima sensibilità. E con una forza e, al contempo, una levità, anche di fronte alla consapevolezza del male incurabile, che rimangono il più grande insegnamento che poteva lasciarci. Massimo è stato molto vicino alla Fondazione Eranos; intellettualmente curiosissimo, non si stancava di informarsi sulla sua storia e sul lavoro necessario a tenerne accesa la motivazione. Qualche anno fa era stato nostro relatore, in una conferenza indimenticabile: nonostante la già ben visibile stanchezza aveva saputo, come sempre, affascinare tutti. Proprio in questi mesi, non senza affanno, con una tenacia ammirevole è riuscito ancora a correggere il testo del suo intervento, che il lettore può ora leggere nel 76° Annale di Eranos (2022-2023-2024), ora in corso di pubblicazione. Ricorderemo Massimo per la sua gentilezza, la sua grazia, la sua devozione agli studi e la raffinata ironia con cui sapeva parlare persino della morte, come nel corso della nostra ultima telefonata. Rimane il suo vivo ricordo e il nostro grande affetto.

It is with great sorrow that we must announce the passing of Massimo Danzi (1954–2026), a refined scholar and dear friend from whom, over the years we knew him, we learned what it means to face life, in all its forms, with spirit, profound intelligence, and immense sensitivity. And with a strength and, at the same time, a lightness—even in the face of the awareness of an incurable illness—that remain the greatest lesson he could leave us. Massimo was very close to the Eranos Foundation; intellectually curious, he never tired of learning about its history and the work needed to keep its mission alive. A few years ago, he was our keynote speaker at an unforgettable conference: despite his already evident fatigue, he managed, as always, to captivate everyone. Just in recent months, not without difficulty but with admirable tenacity, he managed once again to revise the text of his speech, which readers can now find in the 76th Eranos Yearbook (2022–2023–2024), currently in press. We will remember Massimo for his kindness, his grace, his devotion to scholarship, and the refined irony with which he could speak even of death, as he did during our last phone call. His vivid memory and our deep affection for him remain.
