THE BALANCE BETWEEN DELIVERANCE AND DISCIPLINE
(A traveling ministry series)
Let me tell you an interesting experience of my life as a traveling minister.
Several years ago, I used to suffer a lot on my trips and this had nothing to do with how I was treated or my financial condition. It was actually my stomach. I had a very sensitive stomach. If I eat anything a little out of the regular I will start stooling.
So I had to do something about it. First I turned to medication. I will always carry sachets of tetracycline and flagyl with me on my trips. Then I dare not eat on the way. If I must eat it would be either bread or sausage. Something that can hold my tummy from running. I can tell you it was a terrible experience. This continued for years. Then one day it struck me. This is not just a health challenge. This is an affliction. How can a traveling minister have a sensitive stomach. When I am on mission trips, the first thing I use in the morning was the medicine. When it's time to leave for my meeting venue I must use the medicine. It got so bad that I knew at some point that the medicine was gradually failing, somehow my body had developed a resistance to the medicine. At that point I knew I had to do something about it.
I took it to the Lord in prayer and I was prompted to speak to my body. I have learnt to speak to my body on this job. The demands of our work leaves little or no space for a weak or sick body. For instance, if you take international trips regularly you will understand what I am talking about. It's not for the weak. Airport logistics is not for those that are not fit. You can't be sick when you are traveling. Especially if you are not flying first or business class. You are on your own. If you are taking a direct flight you could survive but God bless you that you have to use connecting flights, you will know that traveling is not as pleasurable as many see it.
Back to my story. I recognized that my situation was an affliction. A limitation that the enemy wants to put in my life to tamper with my effectiveness as a traveling minister. At that point, I put into practice the scriptures, submit to the Lord, resist the devil and he will flee from you. Oh I turned to affliction, and addressed it, it can no longer hide, I said you sensitive stomach condition I rebuke you as a messenger of the gospel. Leave my body now!
Friends, God took care of it and I didn't realize on time. Do you know I went for months before I remember that I had not had the cause to buy the medicines or store them on me for my trips? God gave me a new stomach. What a deliverance! You can't imagine the fear I lived with for years because of my stomach situation then. I wasn't afraid of demons but I feared that my stomach would trouble me in a meeting and mess up my meeting and suddenly all that was gone!
Now let me put a balance here. God delivered me from affliction and I have been able to sustain it by some form of discipline on my part. It is important that a minister, now especially a traveling minister must be disciplined with food. You cannot be a glutton. Many people are so nice when they are hosting you as a mark of honour they would put before you varieties. They don't know which one you would like more or how much of that you can eat, so they prepare a table before you! Don't jump into the food and start consuming them as if that would be your last. Eat moderately. Eat to have strength to be a blessing not to block the flow of the Spirit. You should know that when the flesh is so satisfied the spirit is weakened. To be spiritually alert you have to put control on your appetites. Not just food alone. All appetites.
I have heard stories of ministers who didn't handle their appetite for food well. Some have happened right in my presence. They are not good stories at all. As a matter of discipline, if I must eat when I am traveling , I eat very light, maybe a snack. Whether local or international trips. You should pay more attention to this if you do international travels. Let me share this before I go on. Usually the first thing I need when I arrive for my meetings would be some food. This is because I usually don't eat or eat very light when I am traveling. It's just a discipline. Yes I have been delivered from a sensitive stomach but I don't tempt God. There are things you don't eat when you know you can't get a bathroom for a few hours. So when I get to meetings where my hosts are insensitive or just ignorant I suffer. Well let's say I suffered, because that's not the situation now.
In those days I used to worry a lot about how people will feel about me of I make my own food arrangements while they are hosting me. Having been in ministry for many, many years I now worry about myself. I take care of myself so that I can be effective for ministry. I don't get annoyed or bittered with them. I just take care of myself and the men that travel with me, and everyone is happy. No grudges.
I think it was sometimes last year I was traveling out of the country. My flight was in the afternoon and as usual I had not eaten anything. So close to take off time I felt I should have a snack to hold my stomach till we would be served food on the plane. It was going to be a long flight. While at it I saw a young man eating as if that would be his last . We were traveling together. What!!! I was surprised. This guy are a lot of swallow and vegetables and stuffs. Well you can say certain things are personal and I agree but it's just good to put some discipline to whatever we do.
By principle, I don't like frequent use of the bathroom on the plane, especially when you are not in first/business class. I can count how many times have used the bathroom on a plane. And at those times, it was only once and it was to urinate. When you fly economy and your seat is very far from the toilet , you will have to travel to toilet each time you are pressed. I have seen serious queue on flights to use the bathroom. It's not a good sight.
People get on flights and start eating everything. It's almost like they threw away caution. They would eat so much before we set out, they get on the plane and start eating again. They are the ones eating but I am the one afraid for them. I know soon enough nature is going to call. Personally I don't find it convenient to be going up and down to use the bathroom. So I discipline myself with food when I am traveling. I only had cause to urinate when we are on very long flights. I use the bathroom before we take off and once again if my flight is 7 hours and more. A traveling minister ought to be disciplined with their stomach and appetites. Apostle Paul, a fellow travelling minister said our moderation must be known to all. (Phil. 4:5). He also said we should not use our liberty as licence/ occassion to the flesh.( Gal. 5:13)
Other people can do things anyhow but believers and especially ministers of the gospel must learn to be disciplined in all things. If God delivers you from something, don't walk back into bo***ge!
I hope this speaks to you. Shalom!!!
