THIS DEAD WHALE IS IN RALEIGH: Yes, this enormous 54-foot-long s***m whale that washed up on Wrightsville Beach nearly a century ago is currently in Raleigh.
Imagine the townsfolks’ surprise: Waking up to a dead whale on their beach that fateful day in 1928. Thousands traveled for a chance to see him — but he was becoming a potential health hazard.
Rather than dispose of his body, the science museum in Raleigh recognized that this whale’s sad death could benefit generations of museum-goers.
The whale quickly earned the name “Trouble” because of all the antics involved in transporting a 55-ton whale from the coast to Raleigh.
When he arrived in Raleigh, Trouble was buried in clean, wet sand at the State Fairgrounds to allow time for his bones to be cleaned for the exhibit.
Today - Trouble the Whale hangs in the NC Museum of Natural Sciences in Downtown Raleigh. His bones have allowed kids and adults to develop their interest in marine biology for nearly 100 years.
