Educational tips shared by Poni Abraham
🚨 𝐅𝐈𝐗 𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐑 𝐍𝐆𝐎 𝐁𝐈𝐎
Your organisation’s bio should not sound like it was written by a committee that had three meetings about the meaning of the word “empowerment.” 😂
Here’s a simple 𝐁𝐄𝐅𝐎𝐑𝐄 → 𝐀𝐅𝐓𝐄𝐑 → 𝐖𝐇𝐘 example.
𝐁𝐄𝐅𝐎𝐑𝐄:
“XYZ Organisation is a non-profit organisation committed to empowering vulnerable communities through sustainable, inclusive and transformative interventions in health, education, livelihoods, gender equality and community development.”
Technically correct. But… what do you actually do? 😭
𝐀𝐅𝐓𝐄𝐑:
“XYZ Organisation works with women and young people in underserved communities to improve access to livelihoods, education and essential services. We partner with communities and local institutions to turn practical solutions into lasting change.”
Much clearer.
𝐖𝐇𝐘…?
Because a good organisational bio should quickly tell me:
Who are you?
Who do you work with?
What problem are you addressing?
What do you actually do?
How do you work?
You don’t need to squeeze your entire strategic plan into 80 words.
Your bio is an introduction, not a proposal.
And please…
If someone has to read three paragraphs before they understand what your organisation actually does, then you have a communications problem. 😂
Let’s test this.
Send me your organisation’s bio to my inbox.
I’ll pick a few and do a BEFORE → AFTER → WHY makeover.
Or, if you’re comfortable post it in the comments section, and let the Comms professionals here do a Make-over challenge. Let’s try learning together😊
No shaming; Just better communication.
And if you don’t want your organisation identified, remove the name and send the bio anyway.
Save this post; you’ll need it the next time someone asks you to “just update the organisational profile.”
Cheers…
