Community Service Officers (CSOs) of Surama Village, Region Nine, are now reaping the benefits of their hard work through a thriving citrus farming project that is producing fruits and creating opportunities for income generation.

The group project, managed by the villageโ€™s CSOs, showcases the potential of agriculture as a sustainable livelihood initiative within hinterland communities. Through dedication, teamwork, and consistent care, the citrus farm has flourished, yielding fruits for both household consumption and sale within the community.

The success of the Surama citrus project stands as a testament to the value of community-driven agriculture and the positive impact of investing in local food production.

On Tuesday, May 19, 2026, Subordinate Officer in Charge of Lethem Police Station Traffic Department, Sergeant Persaud, along with Constables John and Jacobs, donated two โ€œStop Children Crossingโ€ signs and five reflector vests to the Road Safety Patrol of St. Ignatius Primary School in the presence of Headmistress Ms. Justa La Rose.

The initiative was aimed at improving the safety of students and other road users in the vicinity of the school, particularly during peak hours when children are arriving and departing the compound.

The school expressed gratitude for the timely donation, noting that the signs and reflector vests will greatly assist in enhancing visibility and increasing motoristsโ€™ awareness around the school environment.

During the presentation, the officers also educated the students and Road Safety Patrol members on their functions and responsibilities while carrying out road safety duties. The ranks encouraged both students and teachers to continue working together in promoting a safer environment and reminded everyone that road safety is a shared responsibility.

Modern tunnel-ventilated poultry pens are transforming Guyanaโ€™s poultry industry, taking local production from traditional systems to world-class standards.

Three state-of-the-art facilities have already been completed at Mon Repos, Cornelia Ida and Onverwagt, and all are currently stocked with chickens performing exceptionally well. Each pen accommodates between 20,000 and 45,000 birds, reaching market weight within just 5 to 6 weeks.

With the capacity to produce 350 to 450 tonnes of meat annually through 6 to 7 production cycles, these facilities are significantly reducing the countryโ€™s dependence on imports while strengthening national food security.

Beyond production, these modern operations are creating opportunities for young people, with approximately 40 young Guyanese directly managing and operating each pen. The facilities are designed for maximum efficiency, requiring only three staff members per pen while delivering strong economic returns of approximately $283 million in annual revenue and $61 million in annual profit per facility.

This initiative represents Guyanaโ€™s commitment to building resilience, advancing food security, empowering youth, and creating a competitive and sustainable poultry industry for the future.

Another visionary project aimed at modernising agriculture and expanding economic opportunities across the country.
