Concerned residents of Karasabai Village is in the process of filing a petition letter to the Village Council calling for urgent action to relocate stray animals from within the community and off public roadways.
The petition comes amid growing frustration over safety hazards and property damage caused by cattle, sheep, and other livestock roaming freely in residential areas and along major village roads, especially at night.
Residents say the issue reached a breaking point just recently when a villager was arrested and placed in the lock ups after hitting a cow with a motorcycle on one of the village roadways during the night. According to community members, the cattle owner had the villager detained, sparking outrage over who should be held responsible when animals are left to roam unattended.
โThe roads are not safe at night. You canโt see the animals until itโs too late. We are tired of accidents, and we are tired of our children not being able to walk freely,โ one resident who signed the petition told this publication.
The petition, signed by dozens of residents, asks the Village Council to work with relevant authorities to:
1. Enforce stray animal control within village boundaries
2. Relocate livestock to designated grazing areas outside of residential zones and roadways
3. Establish penalties for owners who allow animals to wander onto roads
4. Launch public awareness on animal owner responsibilities.
A sitting Toshao in the District has since supported the petition publicly on social media saying.
"Agreed ! this was a subject raised at our VGM yesterday... we are seeing fast upgrades and development, roads etc.... and still facing the issue of 1763? ... for my community we already have a plan to curb this issue. KVC too should work on a permanent system in place ... K/bai is the "main town" of the South Pakaraimas".
Councilors and villagers are expected to review the petition at the next village general meeting and chart the way forward. Residents are urging swift action to prevent further accidents and avoid more confrontations between vehicle owners and livestock owners.
Community members say they support livestock farming as part of village life, but believe animals must be properly secured to protect both people and animals.
