🎉 SPECIAL NEEDS PARENT BINGO 🎉

How many squares can you check? Be honest

From therapy schedules and IEP meetings… to snack bags in the car and celebrating the smallest victories like they’re the Super Bowl, if you know, you know.

Parenting in this community can be beautiful, exhausting, hilarious, and holy all at once.

Drop your “BINGO” in the comments if you filled a row (or the whole card 😅), and tell us which square hit a little too close to home!

Tag a parent who would laugh at this.

💙💛🖤🤎

Our children are not inspirational props.

Please do not look at our children and say
“Seeing them makes me grateful for my life.”

That is not a compliment.

Do not praise a child with Down syndrome for simply existing, smiling, or walking into a room as if their humanity is extraordinary.

And please do not use our children as the backdrop for your lesson on kindness.

That reduces a whole person to someone else’s moral teaching moment.

Our children were not born to make others feel inspired.
They were born to live full, beautiful, ordinary and extraordinary lives.

The harm is subtle, but it is real.

When you treat disabled people as inspiration first, you often stop seeing them as people who deserve access, autonomy, friendship, education, opportunity, and respect.

We do not need pity dressed up as admiration.

We need belonging.
We need equity.
We need people to presume competence.
We need our children seen as fully human.

Our children are not props.
They are people.

Read that again.

If this challenged you, sit with it.
If it resonated, share it.

What raising a child with Down syndrome has taught me…

To celebrate progress others overlook. To fight for inclusion. To find joy in the little things. To lead with patience and fierce love.To build community, because we were never meant to do this alone.

Being part of the BDSA family has reminded me that our stories are powerful, our children are extraordinary, and our community is beautiful.

What has your loved one taught you? Drop one lesson in the comments ⬇️ Let’s learn from each other.

🖤 Black Maternal Health Week | BDSA 🖤

This week, the Black Down Syndrome Association proudly recognizes Black Maternal Health Week — a time to uplift, advocate, and bring awareness to the unique challenges Black mothers face before, during, and after pregnancy.

At BDSA, this work is deeply personal.

Black mothers are often the first advocates for their children — navigating healthcare systems, seeking answers, and fighting for equitable care. For mothers of children with Down syndrome, that journey can come with added layers of uncertainty, bias, and a need for culturally competent support.

Our mission is rooted in empowerment, education, and community — ensuring that Black families raising individuals with Down syndrome are seen, supported, and celebrated at every stage.

We believe:
Every Black mother deserves to be heard
Every diagnosis should come with support — not fear
Every family deserves access to equitable, informed care

This week and every week, we stand with Black mothers — honoring their strength, advocating for their health, and building a village where no one walks this journey alone.

BDSA had an awesome time this afternoon supporting the Down Syndrome Guild of Dallas at their quarterly play date in SW Dallas County. David LaFlore and his wife who are also BDSA family members, hosted an epic event with appearances from therapeutic horses, community partners, the Mayor of DeSoto, , and TX State Representative Aisha Davis.

📞 Ring ring…

“Hello?? …uhh yeah, I’m calling because I heard you STILL haven’t signed up for the BDSA 2026 Family Reunion Conference…”

“…I’m sorry—WHAT?? You missed last year AND you’re thinking about missing this year too??”

“Yeah… no. We’re not doing that.”

“Because let me tell you something—everybody who came last year? Still talking about it.”

“The love, the fun, the resources, the community… yeah, you missed ALL of that.”

“…but don’t worry, I’m calling to help you redeem yourself.”

“Go ahead and get your spot now—it’s only $50 to lock in.”

“Mm-hmm. Payment plan and everything. So no excuses this time.”

“…because when 2026 is even bigger—and it WILL be—you don’t want to be sitting there watching everybody else post about it.”

“Be for real.”

"This is more than a conference… it’s a FAMILY REUNION.”

“…okay I’m hanging up now—but you better go register.”

“…no seriously. I’ll know if you didn’t.”
