This 1992 special broadcast revisited Tampa Fire Department’s deployment to South Florida in the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew—the catastrophic Category 5 storm that struck on August 24, 1992. With sustained winds reaching 165 mph Andrew tore into the Homestead area as one of the most powerful hurricanes ever to hit the United States.

Tampa Fire Department sent two dedicated crews to support response and recovery operations in the Miami region. Their firsthand accounts—what they encountered, what they endured, and how they rose to the challenge—remain deeply memorable.

In-studio interviews feature Captain Tom Forward and Driver‑Engineer Don Bennett, offering their personal perspectives from the deployment.
Field reporting was carried out by TFD’s own Video‑1 Chuck Sutnick who documented conditions on the ground.

Thirty‑six years ago on August 3rd, 1990, smoke rose over The University of Tampa as a rooftop fire threatened Plant Hall. The fire would eventually go to 7-alarms before being brought under control.

Firefighters climbed aerial ladders into the summer heat to stop the blaze before it could spread through the century‑old structure. Their actions saved a piece of Tampa history that continues to inspire generations.

Near the 9:42 mark, this video features a local TV news story.

Check out this incredible clipping from the Tampa Morning Tribune, dated July 17, 1954! 📰

Over 70 years ago, these dedicated Tampa firemen completed a
34-hour advanced first aid course. Out of 212 personnel in the department at the time, a whopping 180 were fully qualified for emergency rescue squad work thanks to the Red Cross.

Shoutout to the rescuers named in this history making photo.
