On the sidelines of the Lomé meeting on the African Union mediation in the crisis in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Great Lakes region, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in the DRC and Head of MONUSCO, James Swan, together with Huang Xia, the United Nations Special Envoy for the Great Lakes Region, met with Dr. Mubita Luwabelwa, Executive Secretary of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR).
The discussions focused on strengthening coordination between MONUSCO, the Office of the UN Special Envoy for the Great Lakes Region and regional partners, including the ICGLR, in support of the Enhanced Joint Verification Mechanism Plus (EJVM+) as well as the ongoing efforts to advance peace, stability and dialogue in eastern DRC and the wider Great Lakes region.
The exchange took place in the broader framework of the Lomé meeting convened under the African Union mediation led by H.E. Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, President of the Council of Ministers of Togo and designated African Union Mediator with the support of the AU Panel of Facilitators, including H.E. Olusegun Obasanjo, former President of Nigeria; H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta, former President of Kenya; H.E. Sahle-Work Zewde, former President of Ethiopia; H.E. Mokgweetsi Masisi, former President of Botswana; and H.E. Catherine Samba-Panza, former President of the Central African Republic or their representatives.
MONUSCO remains committed to working closely with the United Nations, the African Union and regional organizations to support de-escalation, the protection of civilians and a durable political solution to the crisis in eastern DRC.
