Koperativa Asunsaun Produsaun is an agricultural cooperative based in Fatumaca, Baucau Municipality. The cooperative has been growing a variety of crops, including dragon fruit and vegetables such as melons, papayas, tomatoes, bell peppers, chili peppers, and beans.
Now, as one of PARCIC’s pilot farms, the cooperative is taking on a new challenge: flower cultivation, which is still new to Baucau. Although flowers are not food crops, the cooperative is working to reduce the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides as much as possible and to explore more environmentally friendly farming practices.
These practices include using fertilizer made from pig manure, using biochar for raising seedlings, and testing natural pesticides.
The cooperative is currently trialing several types of flowers, including chrysanthemums, frost asters, marigolds, and roses. In August, the cooperative successfully harvested its first chrysanthemums and spray chrysanthemums. These locally grown flowers are gradually becoming known among consumers in Baucau, creating the beginnings of a new local market for cut flowers.

Bucoli Green is an agricultural company founded by Dr. Philip, also known as Dr. Metan, from Kenya. The company is located in Gariuai-Darsula, Baucau Municipality, and works together with three agricultural groups. At Bucoli Green, they grow a variety of crops, including tomato, onion, sweet corn, beans, chili, and bok choy.
Currently, Bucoli Green is working with PARCIC as a pilot farm for testing environmentally friendly agricultural practices. These include the use of organic pesticides, coco peat, biochar, and coco fiber as organic mulch, with the aim of improving soil conditions and supporting healthier crop production. Through this pilot activity, we would like to demonstrate how natural materials such as coco peat, biochar, and coco fiber can be used to improve soil quality and promote more sustainable agriculture.
In this video, we will show you some of the activities we are carrying out together with Bucoli Green.

🌱 Learning about Biological Agents and Organic Pesticide Production

As part of the Capacity Building Project for Agricultural Technical Training School in Eastern Timor-Leste, PARCIC invited Prof. Loekas Soesanto, a plant pathology expert from Universitas Jenderal Soedirman, Indonesia, to Timor-Leste twice, in July and August.

During the training, students and staff learned how to produce organic pesticides using locally available materials, as well as about the secondary metabolites of biological agents, including Beauveria sp. and Trichoderma sp.

The training provided an opportunity to learn how these beneficial microorganisms and their metabolites can be used to help protect crops from plant diseases and promote more environmentally friendly agricultural practices. 🌿

Following the training, CDC Baucau, in collaboration with PARCIC, has started producing these organic agricultural inputs locally.

The next step is to put what we have learned into practice! 🌱

Field trials have now started with pilot farmers to evaluate the effectiveness of these agricultural inputs under actual farming conditions. Through these trials, we will continue learning together with farmers and exploring practical and sustainable approaches that can be applied in Timor-Leste.

By combining technical knowledge with locally available resources, we aim to promote sustainable farming practices that are practical and accessible to local farmers.

🌱 How to Use Coco Peat for Healthier Plants

As part of the Capacity Building Project for Agricultural Technical Training School in Eastern Timor-Leste, PARCIC, in collaboration with CDC Baucau, is promoting the production and use of locally made coco peat.

Coco peat is a natural growing material made from coconut husks. It can help improve soil structure, retain water, and support healthy plant growth when mixed with soil, compost, or organic fertilizer.

We would like to show you how to use it! 🌿

1️⃣ Mix coco peat with soil, compost, or organic fertilizer.
Mix them well in an appropriate proportion. A 1:1 ratio can be used as a general guide and adjusted depending on the crop and growing conditions.

2️⃣ The mixture is ready for planting!
Once mixed well, it can be used for seedlings, flowers, potted plants, home gardens, or vegetable production.

Using coco peat properly can help improve soil conditions and create a better growing environment for healthy plants and good production. 🌱

We have recently renovated a corner at CDC Baucau to create a small kiosk where you can find locally produced coconut-based products and agricultural materials, including biochar, coco peat and coco fiber.

🌱 Building Agribusiness Skills for the Next Generation of Farmers

As part of the "Capacity Building Project for Agricultural Technical Training Schools in Eastern Timor-Leste", PARCIC, in collaboration with IADE Baucau, conducted BIN and KIN Business Training at CDC Baucau.
During the seven-day training, held from 6 to 14 July, CDC students learned the fundamentals of agribusiness, including:
• How to start a business
• Product cost calculation and pricing
• Financial and cash management
• Business planning for sustainable and profitable farming
The training helped students understand that successful farming requires not only technical production skills but also strong business management and an entrepreneurial mindset.
PARCIC will continue to support the students as they develop practical agribusiness plans and prepare to launch their own agricultural businesses.

🌱 Introducing Coco Peat Production

PARCIC, in collaboration with CDC Baucau, is implementing the Capacity Building Project for Agricultural Technical Training School in Eastern Timor-Leste.

Today, we are pleased to introduce locally produced coco peat, a natural and eco-friendly growing medium made from coconut husks.

We hope farmers, nurseries, and home gardeners will make good use of coco peat for seedling production and soil improvement.
