GRACE Gorillas GRACE is a Congolese-led conservation organization that envisions a world where people, gorillas and forests thrive.

GRACE is the world’s first to rewild Grauer’s gorillas and partners with local communities to protect 500,000 acres of gorilla habitat. GRACE is the world’s only sanctuary for rescued Grauer’s gorillas, a Critically Endangered subspecies found only war-torn eastern DR Congo. Grauer's gorillas have suffered a catastrophic population decline of nearly in the past 20 years, largely due to poaching ex

acerbated by insecurity and humanitarian crises in the region. Located in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) near the Tayna Nature Reserve, GRACE provides rehabilitative care for gorillas orphaned by poaching, nursing orphans back to health and giving them the chance to be with other gorillas again. The gorillas at GRACE—all orphans—form a tight-knit surrogate family and spend their days together in forest habitats, learning survival skills necessary for future reintroduction back into the wild. GRACE is breaking new ground in its work planning for what would be the first reintroduction of Grauer’s gorillas. The sanctuary in DR Congo is run entirely by Congolese staff, who work hand-in-hand with local communities to implement conservation actions to protect wild gorilla habitat. GRACE works with Congolese communities on conservation education, forest protection, and sustainable livelihoods to help secure a future for orphaned gorillas and their wild counterparts and to foster a peaceful coexistence between humans and gorillas.

This World Environment Day, we’re celebrating one of nature’s most powerful protectors: gorillas. 🦍🌿

Gorillas are a keystone species, helping shape the health of the forests they call home. As they move through the forest, they disperse seeds, support new plant growth, and help maintain the biodiversity of one of the most important forest ecosystems on Earth.

When we protect gorillas, we protect so much more: forests that store carbon, wildlife that shares their habitat, and communities whose futures are deeply connected to the land.

At GRACE, conservation is rooted in partnership with local communities in eastern DR Congo. Together, we are protecting gorillas, forests, and the future we all share.

One year ago today, GRACE announced a conservation first: the successful rewilding of Grauer's gorillas! 🎉

On the anniversary of that milestone moment, we're proud to share our 2025 Impact Report.

This Special Edition celebrates two historic achievements:
👉 The first successful rewilding of four Grauer's gorillas from GRACE
👉The community-led creation of the Usala Conservation Corridor, protecting more than 500,000 acres of critical forest habitat in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo

These accomplishments were possible because of the dedication of local communities and supporters around the world who share our vision of a future where gorillas, forests, and people thrive. 🌍🦍💚

We invite you to explore the report and celebrate what we've accomplished together. Thank you for making this a year to remember!

Many of you have reached out to check on our team, and we are so grateful. 💚

As Ebola cases rise in DR Congo, we want to share a quick update on GRACE’s preparedness response.

First and most importantly: everyone at GRACE is safe, including our staff and the gorillas in our care.

While confirmed cases are not in GRACE’s immediate area, our team has activated response protocols based on lessons learned in 2018. We are taking immediate precautions, including:

✔️ Training on safety protocols and procedures
✔️ Twice-daily temperature checks
✔️ Expanded hygiene and sanitation measures
✔️ Securing food, supplies, and essential resources to ensure our staff and gorillas have everything they need

If you’d like to support our response, donations will help provide critical supplies for our team, gorillas, and community: https://ow.ly/SRiZ50Z23Ig

10 years ago today, Lulingu was confiscated from the illegal wildlife trade as an orphaned infant - the youngest gorilla to arrive at GRACE.

At 18 months old, she needed intensive early care from dedicated caregivers who helped her recover from a traumatic start to life.

As she grew stronger, Lulingu was introduced to Pinga, an adult female gorilla who became her surrogate mother and helped her learn how to be part of a gorilla family.

Over the next decade, Lulingu grew up surrounded by care, companionship, and second chances.

Recently, she became one of the first Grauer’s gorillas ever rewilded, returning to the forests where she belongs.

To see just how far she’s come, take a look back at Lulingu's remarkable rescue in this incredible GoPro footage:

In 2016, Lulingu was saved by the Gorilla Rehabilitation and Conservation Education Center (GRACE), the world's only sanctuary for Grauer’s gorillas, a Criti...

Here are 5 simple ways to help protect critically endangered Grauer’s gorillas today on ! 🦍💚

With fewer than 6,800 Grauer’s gorillas remaining in the wild, they are among the world's 25 most endangered primates. Their future depends on all of us.

Which action will you take?

We are heartbroken to share that a beloved member of the GRACE team, John Muhenzo Vayighonga, passed away unexpectedly on May 9, 2026.

John was born in Butembo and grew up in Kasugho, a village near GRACE. He joined our team in 2021 and quickly became known as someone who was hardworking, kind, and always willing to help wherever he was needed.

John brought many skills to GRACE. He first worked in our garden, helping grow food that supports the health and wellbeing of the gorillas in our care. He later joined our maintenance team, where he helped with electrical repairs, vehicle maintenance, generator repairs, and maintaining GRACE’s forest perimeter fence.

As a driver for GRACE, John transported food, medicine, supplies, and equipment to our sanctuary, often traveling long distances on difficult roads to make sure our team and the gorillas had what they needed. During periods of insecurity last year, when supplies were harder to access, John’s courage and dedication helped keep GRACE operating.

John earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Conservation of Nature and Development of Kasugho, reflecting his commitment to learning and his dedication to animal care and conservation.

John will be remembered as a committed colleague, a hardworking professional, and a reliable team member. His dedication, technical versatility, and collaborative spirit contributed greatly to GRACE’s daily operations and to our mission of gorilla rehabilitation and conservation. His legacy lives on in the impact he made on his colleagues and in the conservation work he faithfully supported.

We honor John’s life and hold his family, friends, and loved ones in our hearts during this incredibly difficult time. May he rest in peace.

Peek-a-boo from the forest 🌿👀

This gorilla may look like they’re playing hide and seek behind the tree, but behaviors like this can actually serve several purposes. Gorillas often use trees and vegetation for comfort, observation, play, or simply as a way to feel secure while watching the activity around them.

You’ll also notice another gorilla nearby. Even during quiet moments, gorillas stay socially aware of the members of their group.

Small moments like this remind us that gorilla life isn’t always dramatic or fast-paced. Often, it’s thoughtful, observant, and full of subtle social interactions happening quietly in the forest. 💚
