A Season of Giving, Compassion, and Togetherness

During the last festive season, D-BRAF shared a meaningful time of love and service with the Missionaries of the Poor- Bethlehem Home in Busega, Kampala-Uganda. We spent the day with the children under their care, coming together in prayer, sharing a meal, and spreading joy through simple but impactful acts of kindness.

As part of this outreach, we distributed adult diapers, which are essential items for the daily care and dignity of the children at the organisation. Beyond the donations, the moments of fellowship, laughter, and spiritual connection reminded us of the true meaning of the festive season.

At D-BRAF, we believe that giving goes beyond material support. It is about presence, compassion, and standing with those who need it most.

Together, we continue to serve with love and purpose.

Clearer Vision, Renewed Hope at Old Kampala Primary

Following our initial visit and assessment, D-BRAF supported learners with low vision at Old Kampala Primary School by facilitating eye treatment and providing corrective glasses. What began as a conversation and careful listening has now turned into action that is already making a difference in the classroom.

For many of these students, receiving treatment and proper eye care means more than improved sight. It means renewed confidence, reduced pain, and a fair chance to learn without barriers caused by vision challenges. Smiles, relief, and excitement filled the room as learners experienced clearer vision for the first time.

This moment reflects our continued commitment to ensuring that no child is left behind because of an eye condition. With the right support, every learner can see a brighter future.

Together, we are turning hope into impact.

This week, the D-BRAF team visited Old Kampala Primary School to meet students who are living with low vision and other visual challenges. The visit was the beginning of a journey of listening, understanding, and walking alongside these young learners as they navigate their education with limited sight.

We sat with students from Primary 6 and 7, heard their experiences, and learned about the daily struggles they face in class — from reading the board to coping with constant headaches and blurred vision. Yet, what stands out most is their courage, determination, and hope for a brighter future.

This first meeting marks the beginning of our support program at the school — a commitment to ensure that no learner is held back because of an eye condition.

Together, we are building a pathway to clearer vision and renewed confidence.
Stay tuned for the next update as the students begin receiving treatment and eye care support.

Following Amani Ngemba’s recent visit to his former school, Old Kampala Primary, D-BRAF has begun working closely with the school to improve support and access for students with low vision.

During the visit, teachers raised concerns about learners struggling with vision problems, leading D-BRAF to begin identifying pupils in Primary 6 and 7 who need urgent treatment.

One of the students, Alain Lesali, shared that since 2013, exposure to too much light and wind has caused him severe eye pain and blurry vision, making it difficult to see clearly. Another learner, Mwisha Irakoze, also described how frequent headaches and blurred sight affect his reading and concentration.

“I am happy that D-BRAF is coming in to help and support me so I can have a normal and comfortable way of learning,” Mwisha said.

Amani’s return to Old Kampala, where his own journey began in 2006, is now paving the way for stronger collaboration between the school and D-BRAF, ensuring that no child is left behind because of vision challenges.

Hope in Motion: Daniella’s Journey Continues

In Rwanda, our director Grace Ngemba and the D-BRAF team visited Daniella once again following up on her treatment and celebrating the progress she’s making.

Every visit reminds us why our mission matters to stand with those fighting to keep their sight, and to bring light where it’s fading.

Yesterday, our director Amani Grace Ngemba visited the Missionaries of the Poor – Bethlehem Home in Busega, Kampala Uganda. During the visit, he toured the offices, met with the team, and took time to learn more about the incredible work this charity organization is doing to serve vulnerable communities.

The visit opened doors for shared understanding and future collaboration. As D-BRAF, we look forward to building a partnership that will allow us to reach more people, strengthen our mission, and bring hope to those in need.

Back to Where It Began: Inspiring the Next Generation

Today at Old Kampala Primary School, our director, Grace Amani Ngemba, returned to his former school to share both knowledge and inspiration with the learners. As a former student of this school, his visit was not only a homecoming but also a moment to encourage the children through his personal journey.

In a special science class, he spoke about low vision awareness, shared a motivational talk, and opened the floor for questions and discussion — creating a space where learners could be inspired, informed, and reminded that challenges do not define their future.

Grace’s story is one of resilience. Born in Bukavu, DR Congo, he faced vision loss from glaucoma, fled war, and eventually resettled in the USA where he was declared legally blind at 16. Yet, instead of giving up, he transformed his struggle into strength by founding Defenders of Blind Rights in Africa (D-BRAF), an organization that today defends, empowers, and advocates for the blind across Africa.

His return to Old Kampala Primary School is a full-circle moment — from being a young learner in Uganda to now leading an international movement for sight and dignity.

At D-BRAF, we believe in stories that give hope, and today’s event is a reminder that every child has the power to rise above challenges and make a difference.

In Rwanda, the D-BRAF team, represented by our director Grace Ngemba and accompanied by a few members, continued to follow up on the treatment of Daniella.

We are encouraged to see progress in her treatment journey and remain committed to walking alongside her and her family every step of the way.

At D-BRAF, every step forward is a sign of hope and a reminder of why we exist to defend the rights of the blind and support those at risk of losing their sight.

The Joy of Restoring Hope 🌟
Today, we had the privilege and immense joy of supporting a father who has been living with visual impairment for many years.
At D-BRAF (Defender of Blind Rights in Africa), our mission is to defend the rights of people with visual disabilities and provide them with the care and support they need to live with dignity and hope.
Helping is not just about offering material support — it’s about bringing light to a heart that has known darkness. ✨
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all our partners and supporters who make these actions possible. Together, let’s continue building a brighter future for people living with visual impairments and their families.

While in Rwanda, we held a meeting to reflect on the journey we have made and the accomplishments we have achieved. Together, we strengthened our mission, vision, and core values as a reminder to all team members.

We also carried out a general staff training and agreed on new strategies to guide the fulfillment of our goals and mission as D-BRAF in Kamembe, Rwanda.

More updates are coming as we continue finding ways to help and defend the rights of the blind across Africa.

🌟 Give Daniella a Chance to See the World Again 🌟
Daniella is a bright, joyful little girl — full of dreams and laughter.
But her life has been forever changed by a cruel, aggressive disease.
She has already lost one eye, and now her remaining eye is fading day by day.
This last eye is her only window to the world… and the clock is ticking.
She can still see — but for how long?
Every moment without proper treatment brings her closer to a dark, silent world where she may never again see the faces she loves, the beauty of nature, or the simple joys of childhood.
At D-BRAF (Defender of Blind Rights in Africa), we refuse to let Daniella — and countless children like her — fight this battle alone.
Our mission is urgent, and our work never stops:
👁‍🗨 Protecting the sight of children at risk of losing their vision
🧑🏽‍⚕️ Providing medical and psychological care to heal both body and spirit
📚 Reintegrating children with visual impairments into schools and community life
⚖️ Defending the rights and dignity of the blind and visually impaired across Africa
But we cannot do this without you.
Daniella’s future depends on compassionate hearts willing to act.
Your support can provide the treatment she desperately needs — and give her hope for a life filled with light.
🌈 Join us in this fight. Stand with Daniella. Help us keep her world bright. 🌈
Because no child should face darkness alone.
