Assistance en vivres et non vivres aux communautés des Peuples Autochtones Batwa vivant autour du Parc National de Kahuzi-Biega

Au cours de la journée du 21 juillet 2026, 378 ménages de Peuples Autochtones Batwa et une dizaine d'autres, tous vivant autour du Parc National de Kahuzi Biega (PNKB) dans le Territoire de Kabare ont reçu une assistance de vivres et non vivres de la part de l'organisation Strong Roots Congo, en collaboration avec la Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) et l’Institut Congolais pour la Conservation de la Nature.

Cette assistance humanitaire de près de 23 tonnes des vivres constituées de riz, de haricots, de la farine de maïs, de l’huile végétale, du sel de cuisine, et de non vivres : des savons, des casseroles, des assiettes, des seaux, des bidons et des gobelets ; a été accordée à ces ménages des Groupements de Mudaka, Miti, Bugorhe et Irhambi-Katana dans un contexte particulier de guerre. Les conditions de vie des Batwa autour du PNKB et exacerbées par la guerre, étaient déjà très difficiles par manque d’accès aux moyens de subsistance de base dans la région.

Tout en remerciant Strong Roots Congo pour cet appui aux Peuples Autochtones Batwa, le Chef du PNKB, Dr Arthur Kalonji a appelé d’autres partenaires et organisations à emboîter ce pas pour apporter assistance aux communautés riveraines de ce Site du Patrimoine Mondial : « Les communautés riveraines du PNKB traversent une période particulièrement difficile. Nous remercions Strong Roots pour ce soutien qui répond à des besoins réels. Nous espérons que d'autres partenaires se joindront à cet élan afin d'accompagner les populations les plus vulnérables vivant autour du Parc ».

C’est dans un espace de deux mois que l’organisation Strong Roots avait encore apporté une assistance humanitaire des vivres à 221 ménages Batwa vivant autour du PNKB dans la Chefferie de Kabare.

Avant la distribution des kits d’assistance aux ménages, Maître Innocent Bisimwa, Chargé des programmes à Strong Roots, a commencé par rappeler aux bénéficiaires ( y compris des personnes en situation d'handicap) , de l'importance écologique et vitale du PNKB pour les communautés riveraines et plus généralement

On May 12th, in partnership with Forest and Health Alliance , Strong Roots Congo provided food assistance to more than 200 Batwa Indigenous People households, which represent approximately 1000 individuals in the Kabare Chiefdom.

Food insecurity for communities living around Kahuzi-Biega National Park has become increasingly precarious since the outbreak of war in South Kivu Province. The local communities surrounding this UNESCO World Heritage Site, and particularly the Batwa Indigenous People, are suffering serious humanitarian consequences of the war due to their inaccessibility to agricultural land and other natural resources, which they depend on for their survival. The war has exacerbated widespread poverty and food insecurity, which these communities were already vulnerable to even before the war. This food aid consisted of nearly 7 tons of rice, cornmeal, beans, and salt, as well as 950 liters of vegetable oil.

Strong Root’s program officer stated that “The Batwa Indigenous People have been living in very difficult conditions lately. Their livelihoods have been destroyed, they no longer have access to fields, and supply chains have been disrupted. Action was needed. All Batwa Indigenous households in the villages of Buyungule, Cibuga, and Muyange received aid, each with: 10 kg of beans, 10 kg of rice, 12.5 kg of cornmeal, 5 liters of vegetable oil, and 3 kg of salt.” One mother of several children danced and exclaimed, “I am so happy! My children and I are going to eat the beans and fufu. Thank you so much!”

Dominuque discussed the work we do at Strong Roots Congo protecting endangered Grauer’s gorillas, supporting Indigenous communities, and building sustainable futures in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
