🇨🇦 Courage in the face of impossible odds - Brittany was lucky enough to learn about Pilot Officer Andrew Mynarski while on the Legion National Foundation Pilgrimage of Remembrance. Shown in the photo is the exact spot where the bomber crashed through the bush line. Also shown in the photo is the propeller cone from the aircraft that was used as a pot for flowers by a local for years after the war.

On June 12, 1944, Pilot Officer Andrew Mynarski of Winnipeg displayed extraordinary bravery when his Lancaster bomber was shot down over France. With his own aircraft engulfed in flames, Mynarski delayed his escape in an attempt to rescue a trapped crewmate.
Though severely burned, he refused to abandon his comrade. Mynarski later succumbed to his injuries, but the crewmate he tried to save survived the crash. For his selfless heroism and devotion to duty, Mynarski was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross, the Commonwealth's highest award for valour.

His sacrifice remains one of the most inspiring examples of courage in Canadian military history.

🇨🇦🏳️‍🌈June is Pride Month in Canada🏳️‍🌈🇨🇦

As a Legion, we recognize the damage that was done to our veterans during the purge.

Canada has a sordid history of what can be termed as state-sponsored homophobia, bi-phobia, and transphobia. For decades there was a policy aimed at oppressing and consequently criminalizing same-sex conduct through “heteronormalization.” Heterosexual relationships were depicted by society at large as being ‘normal’. Conversely, same-sex relationships were often suppressed and depicted as savage or abnormal sexuality through state-backed churches and criminal law.

The LGBT community has historically been the subject of prosecution and discrimination in the Canadian Armed Forces, RCMP, and Federal Public Service. The campaign to identify and purge LGBT Federal Public Servants on the basis of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression in the Federal Public Service and military began in the 1950s and continued for decades.
