Environmental Monitoring Advisory Board EMAB is a public watchdog for the environmental management of the Diavik Diamond Mine. EMAB was founded in 2001 under the Environmental Agreement.

The Environmental Agreement is a legal contract signed by Diavik, the federal, territorial and aboriginal governments that outlines respect for air, land, water, fish and sacred and cultural locations and objects. The EMAB is at arms length and independent from the signing parties.

On August 21, 2026, EMAB responded to the Minister’s decision regarding the shutdown by requesting a meeting to discuss the matter further. EMAB received the Minister’s response to that request in a letter dated September 18, 2026. This is now available in our online library.

🚨 IMPORTANT UPDATE 🚨

The Minister of Environment and Climate Change has initiated a consultation process on a request from Diavik Diamond Mines Inc. (DDMI) to wind down EMAB by March 2027.

EMAB has submitted a detailed response to the Minister. EMAB disagrees with the request; we believe independent oversight of mine closure is critical and should continue until all closure and monitoring is complete.

This decision could have significant implications for environmental oversight and reclamation of the mine site.
