What makes someone feel truly heard?

In his book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen R. Covey reminds us that effective communication is not only about being understood, but also about making an effort to understand others.

Sometimes, feeling heard begins with something simple: being given the space to speak and knowing that the other person is trying to understand before responding.

A fitting thought to close our effective communication series this month. 💚

For the final post in our effective communication series, we are taking a step back to consider the purpose behind every message.

We communicate for many reasons, may it be to share information, ask questions, express needs and ideas, and build relationships. Understanding why we are communicating helps us determine what information needs to be shared, who should receive it, which method is most appropriate, and what could happen if the message is unclear or misunderstood.

Effective communication begins before we speak, write, or send. Taking a moment to consider the purpose, audience, message, and possible risks can help us communicate with greater clarity and intention. 💚

Aspire Training Academy is proud to recognize Tundra Transfer Ltd., a locally owned business whose support helps us maintain a welcoming and well-equipped space while keeping our participants hydrated along the way! 💧

Partnerships like ours show what is possible when organizations work together: sharing resources, supporting one another, and helping expand access to programs and opportunities across the North.

Thank you to Arman and the entire Tundra Transfer team for being such great community partners. You rock! 💚

Have you ever heard someone say “I’m fine” and immediately sensed that something was wrong?

Last week, we explored the different ways we communicate and how several forms can work together in one interaction. Sometimes, however, our words, tone of voice, facial expressions, and body language do not send the same message.

When feelings or attitudes are being communicated and these signals do not align, Albert Mehrabian’s 7–38–55 model suggests that people may place greater weight on tone and visible nonverbal cues when interpreting what someone means.

Someone may say “I’m fine” while sounding upset or appearing uncomfortable. The words communicate one thing, but the way they are delivered may suggest another.

While the model is not a formula for all communication, it offers an important reminder: our messages are clearer when our words, tone, and nonverbal cues support one another. 💚

Last week, we had the opportunity to take part in the inaugural Youth Opportunity Fair, organized by PYE Yellowknife, Home Base YK, and their partner organizations!

It was great connecting with young people and other community members, sharing more about the work we do, and chatting about the different opportunities, skills, and supports available for them.

We were happy to be part of a fun-filled afternoon focused on helping youth explore what they aspire to do and the opportunities that can help them get there.

A big thank you once again to the organizers, fellow participating organizations, and everyone who stopped by our booth!

We’ll see you at the next youth event? 💚

There is a wide range of ways in which we communicate, and more than one may occur at any given time. These can generally be grouped into four categories: verbal, nonverbal, written, and visual communication.

In many interactions, these forms work together. A conversation may involve spoken words, tone of voice, facial expressions, and gestures, while a presentation may combine verbal explanations with written text and visual aids. Each element can shape how clearly a message is received and understood.

Recognizing the different ways we communicate can help us become more intentional about the messages we send and more attentive to how others may interpret them. 💚

Have you ever stopped to think about what is actually happening when we communicate?

Over the past few months, we have explored trauma-informed care. This August, we are shifting our focus to another essential part of building respectful and supportive relationships: effective communication.

Whether we are speaking, writing, using gestures, or sharing information in other ways, a message is being sent and received. It may sound simple, but understanding these basic elements gives us a starting point for exploring how communication works, and why messages may not always be received as intended.

In the coming weeks, we’ll explore practical ways to communicate more clearly, listen more intentionally, and build stronger connections in our workplaces, communities, and everyday interactions. 💚

Happy Civic Holiday!

Did you know that the August long weekend goes by different names across Canada? Here in the Northwest Territories, we celebrate Civic Holiday. Across the country, you'll also hear names like B.C. Day in British Columbia, Heritage Day in Alberta, Saskatchewan Day, Terry Fox Day in Manitoba, New Brunswick Day, Natal Day in Nova Scotia, and more.

But, whatever you call it, we hope you get to take some time today to pause, recharge, and do something fun! 💚
