It is with great sadness and a heavy heart to share that one of our cherished advisors, Verner Tekeghaghpak Wilson III has begun his journey to the spirit world.

Verner became an advisor with the Arctic Indigenous Fund in 2021. During his time with the fund, Verner passionately advocated for his ancestors, community members, Indigenous peoples, future generations, and for all the lands and waters in the Arctic. He made so many connections all over the world and left an impressionable impact on those he met. He attended meetings with us, shared many meals and told all kinds of stories. He loved sharing the story about his Siberian Yupik name that his mother had given him, Tekeghaghpak, which is a point on Saint Lawrence Island where his ancestors are from.

Verner was never afraid to grab the microphone, or take space to ask pressing questions or share about the importance of the salmon and oceans. He was very involved in all the meetings we had and always jumped at the opportunity to be a strong voice as an advisor for the Arctic Indigenous Fund.

Verner expressed he wanted to become an advisor to be a voice for the Arctic and all the nourishes of the oceans and wildlife.

What Indigenous philanthropy meant to Verner in his words: “It means that it is empowering our voices to ensure that decision makers, not just consider our viewpoints but adopt them, we have strong cultural and traditional values to enable our people to survive in harsh environment for thousands of years and people can learn from our strength and resolve to build up each of our indigenous brothers and sisters. Indigenous philanthropy tries to achieve that. The goal is to make the world a better place for future generations and I believe we have the responsibility to ensure that our future generations have better more fulfilling life that allows our people to thrive in the future”

We will viciously miss Verner’s presence in our circle. We will continue to remember him and all that he was passionate for.

Remember to breathe, light a candle in his honour and be easy on yourselves as we grieve for a beautiful, colourful soul.

Seqininnguaq Qitura is a Greenlandic Inuk artist, Indigenous rights activist and Instagram influencer. Seqininnguaq’s work in art and activism is very much focused on mental health, decolonization and revitalization of Indigenous cultures and languages. They have a diploma in finishing the James Harvard J. McCarthy Indigenous Leadership Seminar and won the greenlandic governmental encouragement award for their local and international work.
They love spending time with people, especially family and friends, love travelling and exploring and is always open and welcoming to all. Indigeneity and mental health is a huge part of their life which is why it’s so important to them and never minds explaining or discussing anything regarding those or other topics.
