United Way NWT is once again part of the Local Voices Rewards program this year. Last year, by completing the survey, United Way NWT received $1,000!

Local Voices is an independent community engagement platform designed to give people who live near or work at Rio Tinto’s Diavik operation an opportunity to confidentially share their views and experiences. The goal is to ensure that company decisions reflect what matters most to the local community.

How the Rewards Program Works:
When you complete the Local Voices survey, you receive tokens that you can allocate to local community groups, including United Way NWT. The more tokens we receive, the greater the support for our programs and services. Your participation not only ensures your voice is heard but also helps strengthen our community services.

The survey is now live until the October 31 inclusively with all community members aged 18 years and older invited to participate. All surveys are 100% confidential and no personal information is shared with Rio Tinto.

United Way NWT’s Community Investment Fund is now open for applications! Registered nonprofits and charities across the NWT are invited to apply for one-year and multi-year grants to address pressing needs in their communities.

We especially encourage applications from organizations working in the following focus areas:

From Poverty to Possibility:
Helping people move out of poverty and meeting basic human needs.

Healthy People, Strong Communities:
Improving access to health and social services, fostering community engagement.

All That Kids Can Be:
Improving early childhood learning and development programs, helping children succeed in school and transition into adulthood.

When wildfires affected NWT communities, Northerners and our partners stepped forward. Together, you’ve helped raise $125,000.

United Way NWT has provided:
• $55,000 in gift cards, distributed by the Salvation Army at the Yellowknife Multiplex and the Hay River Soup Kitchen on location.
• $190,000 in response funding to 10 organizations helping communities meet immediate needs.
• $55,000 in recovery funding to three organizations supporting the work that continues after the immediate emergency.

Response funding went to Liidlii Kue First Nation, Pehdzeh Ki First Nation, the Hamlet of Fort Providence, the Town of Fort Smith, NWT SPCA, Northern Birthwork Collective, NWT Disabilities Council, YK Street Support Network, BAC (Black Advocacy Coalition) Up North, and Hay River Soup Kitchen.

Recovery funding went to Pehdzeh Ki First Nation, NWT Disabilities Council, and Łı́ı́dlı̨ı̨ Kų́ę́ First Nation.

Thank you to every donor and to the organizations putting this support to work in their communities. Recovery takes time, and your generosity helps local partners keep showing up.

Today is World Mental Health Day. This year’s theme reminds us that people with lived experience of mental health challenges have knowledge that can help shape better support.

In the North, community members understand their own strengths, needs and barriers to care. Listening matters. So does making room for their voices in the decisions that affect them.

Through our Resilient Together gatherings and Psychological First Aid training, United Way NWT has helped bring people together to strengthen community connections and support one another through difficult times.

On World Mental Health Day, we encourage everyone to listen with care, challenge stigma and help build communities where people can find support and have a say in what that support looks like.

Today, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we honour residential school Survivors, their families and communities, and the children who never returned home.

Established in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Action 80, this day ensures the history and legacy of residential schools remain an important part of public commemoration and the ongoing work of reconciliation.

Eleven years after the Calls to Action were released, we are reminded that reconciliation requires continued reflection, listening, learning, and action. We remain committed to supporting healing, justice, and meaningful change.

United Way NWT extends a sincere thank you to NorthwesTel for its generous $5,000 contribution to wildfire relief efforts across the Northwest Territories.

This donation will strengthen the work of local organizations responding directly to immediate needs of residents affected by wildfires and also the recovery efforts once the emergency is over.

Support from partners like NorthwesTel demonstrates the strength of Northerners helping Northerners. We are grateful for their commitment to ensuring timely assistance reaches communities when it matters most.
