At the beginning of June, Food Banks Canada released their annual Poverty Report Card. The final grades, while distressing, were no surprise. While Canada as a whole received a D+, Nova Scotia came in with an overall grade of D, which took into consideration experience of poverty (D), poverty measures (F), material deprivation index (C+), and legislative progress (D).
These grades highlight one thing: food insecurity (and poverty) is a political choice. People cannot budget themselves out of food insecurity or poverty - but social policy, focused on better income supports, building better food systems, reforming of social programming and supports, and more, will make a difference.
