Attention all Manitobans that care for the well being of their loved ones entering an apprenticeship or already part of the trades.
Massive changes have been made without consulting the industry!
The Manitoba Government has amended apprenticeship ratios to 2 apprentices for every 1 Journeyperson in all trades. This will put all apprentices at serious risk of injury or potentially death, especially in the construction industry. In 2008, Michael Skanderberg was killed as an electrical helper due to a lack of supervision and guidance from a qualified electrician. Employers will be able to exploit apprentices for their cheap labour and inexperience, thus putting them at risk.
Manitoba does not have a shortage of skilled tradespeople. This change will send many skilled tradespeople to the unemployment line and flood the trades with new apprentices, all to save a few dollars on construction projects at the expense of safety. Apprenticeship is for training so we have more skilled tradespeople, not for cheaper labour.
Red River College is already saturated with the number of seats they have available for technical training. Now we are going to double the need for technical training with no capacity or planning. Apprentices will be stuck in their apprenticeships and will have a tough time progressing to achieving their certification.
This change will also force our skilled tradespeople to seek work out of the province.
We need to let our government know that this reckless decision is not okay. Ralph Eichler is the Minister of Economic Development and Training for our Manitoba government and the one responsible for putting our apprentices at risk. Take the time and let him know that this is not okay! His email is [email protected].
