🌍🤝 When Crisis Strikes, the Strength of Community Is Found in Standing Together ❤️‍🩹

IPW extends its heartfelt sympathies and solidarity to Winnipeg's ethnocultural communities whose families, friends and loved ones have been affected by devastating natural disasters around the world.

Our thoughts are especially with the Nepali and Chinese communities following the catastrophic flooding along the Nepal-Tibet border, and with the Venezuelan community following the devastating earthquakes that struck the country in June.

We also stand with Winnipeg's Indian, Bangladeshi, Pakistani, Sri Lankan, Filipino, Afghan, Vietnamese, Nigerian, Sudanese, South Sudanese, Cameroonian, Brazilian, Dominican, Japanese, Thai and other ethnocultural communities affected by natural disasters this year.

For many newcomers, a disaster thousands of kilometres away is never truly far away. It means worrying about loved ones, waiting for news, and grieving from a distance.

Our thoughts are with all those affected, those mourning loved ones, and those hoping for the safe return of those still missing.❤️

🗳️ Event Recap: Vote, Run, Represent! 🌟

Last Tuesday, community members, local leaders, and school trustee candidates came together for a timely conversation on civic participation, public education, and the importance of diverse voices in decision-making.

Facilitated by Project Manager Carolina Meneses Zamora and Project Coordinator Hiwot Amare of IPW, the session explored the role of school trustees, opportunities for newcomers and racialized communities to take part in local leadership, and practical ways to become more engaged in shaping our schools and communities. 🏫🤝

A big thank you to School Trustee Derek Dabee, Ann Evangelista, MLA Diljeet Brar, the trustee candidates, and everyone who took part in the discussion.

When more people participate, our communities benefit from a broader range of experiences and perspectives. 🗳️🌍

Welcome Fair Debrief: Reflecting, Learning, and Looking Ahead 🌟

Yesterday, the Newcomer Welcome Fair Planning Committee gathered at the SPCW boardroom for an afternoon debrief, reflecting on the annual event's 10th anniversary this year. 🎉

The feedback was very positive, along with lots of thoughtful ideas on how we can make next year’s celebration even better. From strengthening existing features to exploring exciting new additions, there is plenty to look forward to!

One highlight was this year’s Job Fair, which brought added energy to the event and helped attract more newcomers. For many, it made the Welcome Fair not only a celebration, but also a meaningful opportunity to connect with employers and explore new possibilities. 💼🤝

Cheers to our sponsors, incredible volunteers, participating organizations, and all the guests who attended. You all helped make our 10th anniversary a meaningful and memorable milestone, while helping make Winnipeg a more welcoming city for everyone. 💙

🌍 Learning, Reflecting, and Connecting as a Team

Yesterday, the teams from IPW and the Social Planning Council of Winnipeg had the opportunity to visit the Canadian Museum for Human Rights and spend time exploring its powerful exhibits. 🏛️

We reflected on the stories and lessons presented through Love in a Dangerous Time: Canada’s LGBT Purge, The Holocaust, and Palestine Uprooted: Nakba Past and Present. These exhibits prompted meaningful conversations about human rights, discrimination, resilience, and the importance of our work in building more inclusive, welcoming, and equitable communities. 🤝🏽🌎

The visit was followed by a team lunch, giving us another opportunity to connect, share stories, and get to know one another better outside of our usual work setting. 🍽️😊

We are grateful for this meaningful time together as a team, learning, reflecting, and strengthening our connections. 💙

IPW is delighted to share an invitation to this community bowling fundraiser presented by Sadaa-Echoes Consulting in partnership with Manitoba Association for Rights and Liberties (MARL).
