The Manitoba Arts Network (MAN) tours visual and performing artists to communities across Manitoba. MAN is dedicated to connecting Manitoba’s communities to the arts. MAN is a membership based, province-wide association, with the mandate to advance arts and culture in all regions of Manitoba. A registered charitable organization, incorporated in 1984 with offices in the Exchange District of Winnipeg, the Arts Network produces an annual 3-day Showcase conference in October of each year, and coordinates and delivers extensive tours of performance shows and visual arts exhibitions throughout the province on a year-round basis.

Bonnie Conly’s (Bonnie A. Conly) Force Field in the gallery.

One hundred Motanka dolls come together to form a single installation, with each figure carrying its own materials, knots and wishes for peace.

The work draws on a Ukrainian tradition passed through generations while responding to the experiences of Ukrainian women during the ongoing war.

Installed together, the dolls create the “force field” of the exhibition, a collective expression of protection, resilience and hope.

Force Field will tour Manitoba through Art Reaches Manitoba in 2027.

A closer look at Force Field by Bonnie Conly.

The installation is made up of 100 handmade Motanka dolls, each individually folded, wrapped and tied.

Motanka are Ukrainian talismans traditionally made without needles or scissors and are associated with protection, healing and the well-being of the family. Bonnie’s dolls incorporate herbs, grains and materials shared by loved ones.

Together, the 100 figures form Force Field, an installation reflecting on Ukrainian women, cultural memory and resilience during war.

Force Field will tour Manitoba through Art Reaches Manitoba in 2027.

2027 Art Reaches Manitoba

Force Field is an installation of 100 original Motanka dolls, Ukrainian talismans traditionally associated with protection, female spirit and strength.

Created in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the installation reflects on the resilience of Ukrainian women and carries a message of hope for the Ukrainian people.

Bonnie Conly, a Canadian artist of Ukrainian descent, created each doll by folding and winding materials rather than using needles or scissors. Materials were contributed by people close to her, and each knot was tied with a wish for peace and well-being.

In this interview, Bonnie speaks about the traditions behind the work, her connection to Ukrainian ancestry and the making of Force Field.

Jan Jenkins’ (Jan Jenkins) On The Ground in the gallery.

The exhibition brings together individual works and larger groupings across handmade paper, drawing, printmaking and collage.

Originally developed for Drawn Together: Stimulus-Response, a 2023 exhibition at the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba, Jan has continued expanding the series through her research into Manitoba’s forageable plants and their pollinators.

On The Ground will tour Manitoba through Art Reaches Manitoba in 2027.

A closer look at On The Ground by Jan Jenkins (Jan Jenkins).

Across the series, Jan works with papermaking, pen and ink, printmaking and collage, bringing together imagery of plants, pollinators and the natural world.

Her research into Manitoba’s forageable plants and the insects that depend on them continues to shape the work as the series grows.

Featured here are works from (in order) Going Wild, The Search, To the Lake, Emergence, and Urban Chaos.

2027 Art Reaches Manitoba

On The Ground began with Jan Jenkins’ response to Swarm, a novel by Manitoba author Lauren Carter about subsistence survivalism in a dystopian world.

The story led Jan to explore Manitoba’s wild edibles, pollinators and handmade paper made from recycled materials. Her work brings together papermaking, pen and ink, printmaking and collage, drawing from the natural resources found in the landscape around us.

In this interview, Jan talks about the ideas behind the exhibition and how the work developed.

After sharing some of the performances from Manitoba Showcase 2026, we’re going back to where the weekend began.

The Opening Reception at the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium (Westman Centennial Auditorium) brought artists, presenters and delegates together before the first full day of Showcase. The evening included a traditional welcome from Louise Hall, participatory performances from Sincere Apologies (Alternative Facts Pty Ltd), Zenful Moments with Jan Jenkins, and live music from Cristian de la Luna Cristian De La Luna.
