🔎 We’re hiring an Operations Coordinator, in Winnipeg, MB!

As part of CIFFC's national operations team, the Operations Coordinator supports the Coordination Centre during wildfire season, participating in Duty Officer and Aviation Coordinator functions to facilitate interagency resource sharing, mobilization and operational coordination among member agencies.

If you’re a wildfire fire, emergency management, or operations professional ready to:

✅ participate in day-to-day operations supporting national and international wildfire resource coordination and mobilization,
✅ supporting operational decision-making, resource requests and interagency coordination,
✅ monitor wildfire activity, resource availability and emerging operational priorities,

Today marks the United Nations International Day for Disaster Risk, reminding us of the importance of strengthening our collective ability to prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters.

At ICS Canada, we are proud to support this mission by providing a standardized, scalable framework that helps organizations and responders work together effectively in times of crises. The Incident Command System structure ensures that no matter the size or type of incident, roles and responsibilities remain clear.

To ensure homes remain safe for everyone, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction has selected "Resilience Starts at Home" as the theme for the 2026 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction. The theme invites everyone to rethink how we prepare for disasters by remembering that home is both where disaster impacts are felt most directly and where resilience begins.

Our friends FireSmart Canada run a national program that helps Canadians neighbourhood resilience to wildland fire and minimize its negative impacts. It all starts with where you live. Research has shown that homes and their surrounding areas are particularly vulnerable to wildfire, which is why FireSmart principles focus on specific actions residents can implement in those areas, also known as the Home Ignition Zone.

Nos amis d' Intelli-feu Canada gèrent un programme national qui aide les Canadiens et les Canadiennes à améliorer la résilience de leur quartier face aux incendies de forêt et à minimiser les conséquences de ces derniers. Tout commence par l'endroit où vous vivez. La recherche a démontré que les maisons et leurs environs sont particulièrement vulnérables aux incendies de forêt. C'est pourquoi les principes d’Intelli-feu sont axés sur des mesures précises que les résidents peuvent mettre en œuvre dans ces zones, également appelées zones d'inflammation résidentielle.

Today, on World Mental Health Day, we note that the impacts of natural disasters and emergencies can spread far beyond devastation on the landscape. First responders can be impacted well past the end of an emergency and can feel an emotional toll that compounds in the aftermath of each incident.

ICS Canada acknowledges our colleagues in response for their hard work and dedication year after year, and asks our community members to check in with each other, to speak openly about mental health, and to ask for help when you need it. Stigma and barriers to care still exist across response organizations, but if we can support each other to develop a culture of connectedness, we can help to improve long-term mental health outcomes for all.

Aujourd’hui, à l’occasion de la Journée mondiale de la santé mentale, nous soulignons que les répercussions des catastrophers naturelles et le interventions peuvent aller bien au-delà de la dévastation du paysage. Les premiers intervenants peuvent en subir les conséquences bien après la fin d'une intervention et ressentir un poids émotionnel qui s’accumule au lendemain de chaque incident.

Le SCI Canada remercie ses collègues pour leur travail acharné et leur dévouement chaque année, et invite les membres de notre communauté à prendre des nouvelles les uns des autres, à parler ouvertement de santé mentale et à demander de l’aide en cas de besoin. La stigmatisation et les obstacles à l’accès aux soins persistent au sein des organismes d’intervention, mais si nous parvenons à nous soutenir mutuellement pour développer une culture de solidarité, nous pourrons contribuer à améliorer la santé mentale à long terme de tous.

It centers truth-telling, community action, and Survivor-led remembrance. September 30th also marks National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. It is a day of great importance, and of deep reflection. It offers an opportunity to recognize the devastating results of residential schools and to honour Survivors, their families, and their communities.

Today is a day of remembrance and resilience, and a call to reflect on how we can impact reconciliation, both as individuals and through our work. ICS Canada honours the truths of Survivors, their families, and the children who never returned home. 🧡

Common terminology sets the tone 🙏

An important element of ICS is common terminology. Standardized plain language helps people from different organizations and professional backgrounds communicate clearly, reducing the risk of confusion when multiple agencies and disciplines are working together.

From organizational functions and resource descriptions to incident facilities and operational roles, having a common language creates a shared understanding of what is happening, who is responsible, and how the response is organized.

When every incident is different, using one system creates common ground 🤝

The Incident Command System (ICS) is a standardized management system that provides a common organizational structure, terminology and approach for managing incidents and planned events.

At its core, ICS provides a predictable organizational structure, supports responder and public safety, and helps ensure that work is coordinated efficiently and effectively.

ICS supports interoperability by allowing organizations to work within a common incident management framework. When organizations have trained personnel who understand that framework before an incident occurs, they are better positioned to integrate quickly when they are needed. ICS is designed to be scalable and adaptable. Using the system during routine incidents and planned events helps organizations build familiarity and maintain the skills they may need when a larger, more complex emergency occurs. Training provides the foundation; practice turns that knowledge into capability.

Quand chaque incident est différent, utiliser un seul système crée un terrain commun.
