Meet Jesse Larivière, owner of St. Malo Meats!
St. Malo Meats is a locally owned butcher shop serving St. Malo and the surrounding communities. The business offers custom cutting and processing for beef, pork, bison and wild game, along with a retail store featuring high-quality meats, in-house products like pepperettes, jerky and sausages, and other local products.
Jesse was already working at St. Malo Meats under the previous owner and had grown to really enjoy the business. His experience as a fishing and hunting guide also sparked a passion for cutting and processing wild meat. “I’ve always enjoyed the connection between the outdoors and putting food on the table,” Jesse says. “Being able to take wild game from the field and turn it into something people can enjoy is something I’m passionate about.” So, when the opportunity came up to purchase St. Malo Meats, it felt like a good fit.
LRCC provided funding that helped make the purchase possible and has continued to support Jesse as he navigates each new chapter and challenge that comes with running a business. “Having someone in our corner who I could turn to for guidance, advice, and reassurance made a huge difference, especially in the early stages. I’m really grateful to the LRCC for all their help along the way!”
Since taking over, one of Jesse’s biggest successes has been growing the business enough to employ more local people. Being able to create local jobs and build a team from his community has been especially rewarding.
His advice to other Red River Métis entrepreneurs? “If you’re passionate about something, take the chance on yourself and go for it. You never know where taking that chance might lead you. And definitely reach out to the LRCC — their team is super helpful and willing to answer any questions.”
