Happy Pride Month from USW Local 9074! 🌈

Pride is a time to celebrate the strength, diversity, and contributions of 2SLGBTQIA+ people in our workplaces, our union, and our communities. At USW 9074, we believe that every member deserves to be treated with dignity, respect, and fairness—and that includes protecting the rights of 2SLGBTQIA+ members and their families.

Unions have always been at their best when we stand up for those who are treated differently or unfairly. Solidarity means having each other's backs, and we will continue to stand with all our members, no matter how they identify—whether publicly, privately, or anywhere in between.

This Pride Month, we celebrate our members, friends, families, and allies who help make our union stronger. We also recognize that the fight for equality and inclusion continues, and we remain committed to building workplaces where everyone feels safe, respected, and valued.

We invite all members and their families to join us at the Winnipeg Pride Parade as we show our support for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. If you're attending, keep an eye out for the USW flags and come say hello!

Happy Pride Month!

Today at the Union Centre, the Pride Flag was raised as a show of support, solidarity, and recognition for Pride Month. It was great to see such a strong turnout from unions, labour councils, and supporters, including strong participation from the NDP.

As unions, we must always stand up for all workers — especially those who continue to face discrimination, intolerance, and barriers simply for being who they are. There is no place for hate or exclusion in our workplaces or our communities.

As USW Local 9074, we are proud to support our members in the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. We look forward to celebrating Pride Month together and standing alongside our members at upcoming Pride events throughout the month.

Fellow Steelworkers,

Today, we pause to commemorate the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Ottawa — a sacred place dedicated to the memory of Canadians who served our country and were laid to rest at Vimy Ridge without ever being identified. It stands as a powerful reminder that their sacrifice, their courage, and their service will never be forgotten.

On behalf of the Veterans of Steel Committee and all of us in United Steelworkers District 3, we want every member who has served — and those currently serving — to know that your service matters.

Military service leaves its mark in many ways. Some of us have lost friends. Some carry physical or mental wounds that remain long after the uniform comes off. Others sacrificed precious time with family and loved ones in service to something greater than themselves. These sacrifices are real, and they deserve to be acknowledged and remembered.

To every Steelworker who has worn the uniform: thank you. Your commitment, courage, and dedication continue to inspire us all.

And to those who paid the ultimate price, we will remember you — today and always.

In solidarity,

Shawn McIvor

Brothers, Sisters, and Siblings of USW 9074,

One thing I want every member to know is this: your Staff Reps and Executive Officers have your backs. Always.

Whether it’s a ratification vote, a work share vote, a strike mandate, fighting grievances, supporting members through difficult times, or even celebrating a retirement after a long career — that’s what our Local does. We stand together and support one another through it all. From the day you sign a union card to the last day you punch in, USW 9074 is there.

This weekend was no exception.

Staff Rep Mike spent time reviewing a grievance we've been working on that will now be moving forward to arbitration. Staff Rep Phil and I spent most of Saturday reviewing grievances and conducting a ratification vote. While the agreement was voted down, the membership has spoken loud and clear, and we will be heading back to the bargaining table to continue fighting for a deal our members deserve.

At the same time, our Recording Secretary Ernie was out supporting mental health awareness by attending a community mental health walk, while Plant Chair Lionel and I spent several hours preparing and strategizing for a joint labour-management meeting first thing Monday morning.

We’re not sharing this looking for pats on the back. We share it because every member should recognize the amount of work happening behind the scenes to protect our membership and strengthen our Local. We are committed to being the best darned Local in District 3, and sometimes that means giving up Saturdays, working late nights, and doing whatever it takes to represent our members properly. Member driven isn't just our motto.

That’s solidarity.
That’s unionism.
That’s USW 9074.

In solidarity,
Shawn McIvor

USW Local 9074 was proud to support the annual Sash Bear Walk in Steinbach today, standing alongside community members to raise awareness for mental health and the importance of accessible support services for everyone.

With approximately 100 people attending the event, it was inspiring to see so many come together in support of mental wellness and su***de prevention awareness. Mental health matters in every community, and USW 9074 recognizes that access to support and resources can sometimes be challenging in communities like Steinbach. That’s why supporting initiatives like the Sash Bear Walk is so important to our Local.

A special thank you goes out to our Recording Secretary, Ernie Hildebrand, for bringing forward the motion for USW 9074 to financially support the event with a $200 donation. Ernie also helped organize a team of Canadian Guide Rail members to walk together in solidarity and support of this meaningful cause.

We would also like to thank the organizers of the Sash Bear Walk for recognizing our Local during the event. Congratulations as well to Ernie on winning one of the event prizes!

USW 9074 remains committed to supporting mental health initiatives, strengthening our communities, and standing together for the wellbeing of all workers and families.

What a week it’s been, and I just want to take a moment to say thank you to every single one of you.

Running a local takes real teamwork. It’s not just about the people in the spotlight — it’s about members who show up, step up, and keep things moving forward every day.

While I was away at the CLC Convention, your union didn’t miss a beat behind the scenes:

- Sue handled a time-sensitive registered letter for a member.
Marjorie was in early writing cheques before the convention and still found time late at night to share the photos and videos we all enjoyed. All while attending every plenary.
- Vanessa was in Friday to take care of Treasurer duties and continued work on Steelweb. CLC Brother Geoff also got her in to the Friday CLC course.
- Mark and I kept things moving on the new Health & Safety Committee (and honestly, that was mostly Mark). An exciting new way for our members to plug in and engage.

On my end, I stayed busy with the Veterans of Steel meeting, ongoing bargaining issues, and building strong relationships within the labour movement — including connections with the CLC, WLC, and District 3. There’s a lot of excitement out there about the positive changes our local has been making.

I was also proud to nominate Brother Jeff Peterson to the Human Rights Committee, and we’ve already received 8 member nominations for Fall School — that’s incredible to see.

It’s been a full and productive week. I hope all of you have had a chance to relax and enjoy the long weekend — you’ve earned it.

And for those interested, we’re working on plans for a “Meet the President” visit at Russel Metals soon — stay tuned. We have had to cancel a couple times, but now that they are ratified, lets get in there!

Thank you all for your continued support, your effort, and your commitment to making our local stronger every day. I look forward to seeing you all soon!

The CLC Convention was exciting, empowering, had some sad moments when they did the members that had passed since the last convention, tiring & educational too. Marjorie Jenkins met some great people while working as Sargent of Arms for an hour every day. Thanks to the CLC staff for being so great to work with. She tried to speak on a resolution about transit funding & safety. With many of our members having to deal with taking the bus every day, their safety was important to her. Right now that safety isn't always there. When she didn't have a chance to speak someone from ATU asked her if she would do a project with them down the road. May I add she was the next person to speak. There is a picture of many USW & ATU members who were supporting her. Both Marjorie & Shawn took part in the March & Rally that had 2000+ union activities in it from all across Canada walking from the RBC Convention Centre to the Union Centre. Everyone was showing their solidarity while walking, it was so powerful. Scott our District 3 director was amazing when he got up to speak about issues that are so important to all of us. Marty got up to speak about the jobs with steel & aluminum and how important those jobs are to Canada. Marjorie & Shawn talked to other USW locals from across Canada about Women of Steel, Veteran of Steel & Health and Safety and so much more. To find out what they are doing, to maybe bring some of those ideas back to 9074. The last day was a morning filled with different education classes on many topics. Marjorie & Vanessa learned how to deal with management when they are being difficult & don't agree with what you are saying. The tough conversation you have to have some times with them & members. Finally for all members from Russel Metals Bernie Wood was at convention & has asked us to say 'hi' to you all! We will have more to share at our next meeting in June so please come to it or join us virtually. Hope to see you at our next meeting. Solidarity!! ✊✊
