This week, USW 9074 President Shawn McIvor and USW 7531 Vice-President and SMAC President Mike Skrypnyk have been in Regina, Saskatchewan, participating in the Train the Trainer course.

We made the drive out on Sunday excited for the opportunity to learn how to facilitate important union education courses such as Shop Steward and Health & Safety for our members. The course has been expertly facilitated by the amazing Dayna Sykes and includes a full class of nearly 20 Steelworkers from across the District.

Over the past several days, we've been developing the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to become effective instructors and help strengthen the educational opportunities available to our members. Union education is one of the most powerful tools we have to build solidarity, develop leaders, and strengthen our workplaces.

While we're away learning, I want to take a moment to recognize and thank the incredible team back home who continue to keep things moving forward:

πŸ”Ή Staff Representative Mike has been hard at work supporting a ratification vote that required three separate meetings. Also, thanks for the support during a Zoom meeting with our members from Darling!

πŸ”Ή Vice-President Mark Morgan has been spending his evenings assisting members with grievances while also helping develop what is shaping up to be an amazing Orange Shirt Day shirt.

πŸ”Ή Financial Secretary Marjorie Jenkins will be stepping in to handle her duties and attend the Labour Awards on my behalf this Friday.

πŸ”Ή Assistant to the Director Mike Duhra has been working tirelessly to move our newest bargaining unit closer to ratification every day.

πŸ”Ή A special thank you to our Support Staff member Sue for keeping me updated on preparations for the golf tournament and all the latest news from the Union Centre while I'm away.

Strong unions are built by strong teams, and we are fortunate to have so many dedicated people stepping up for our members every day.

Please join me in showing your appreciation by leaving a message of support and thanks in the comments below for all they do.

✊ In solidarity,

Shawn McIvor

πŸŒˆπŸ“šπŸ”₯ Thank You for Making the Together We Read Picnic & BBQ a Success! πŸ”₯πŸ“šπŸŒˆ

On behalf of USW Local 9074, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of our members who helped make the Together We Read Picnic & BBQ such a wonderful community event. Whether you volunteered your time, attended with your family, donated, or helped spread the word, your contributions made a real difference.

A special thank you goes out to the Selkirk and District Labour Council for their generous $500 donation, Gerdau for their ongoing support, and the members of USW Local 9074 for contributing $500 toward the event. Your commitment to our community helps create opportunities for families to connect, learn, and celebrate together.

Events like this remind us why it is so important for unions to support our local labour councils and community partners. When unions work together, we strengthen our communities, build meaningful relationships, and create opportunities that benefit everyone. Supporting literacy initiatives, engaging with our educational partners, and investing in community events are all part of our commitment to making a positive impact beyond the workplace.

As we celebrate Pride Month, we are also proud to support events and initiatives like this that promote inclusion, diversity, and belonging. The labour movement has always been strongest when everyone has a seat at the table, and we stand with the 2SLGBTQIA+ community in building welcoming and respectful spaces for all.

Thank you again to everyone who helped make this event possible. We look forward to continuing this important work and creating even more successful community events in the future.

πŸ“… A reminder that the next Selkirk and District Labour Council meeting will be held next Wednesday at the Union Hall in Selkirk starting at 7 pm. We encourage affiliates, activists, and community-minded members to attend and be part of the conversations that help strengthen our movement.

Together, we read. Together, we support. Together, we build stronger communities.

In Solidarity,

Shawn McIvor
President, USW Local 9074

πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦βš™οΈ Proud to Serve. Proud to Belong. Proud to Be Union. βš™οΈπŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦

The USW District 3 Veterans of Steel Committee is excited to introduce a new way to recognize and celebrate the service of our veterans, first responders, and those who continue to serve our communities and country.

The new Veterans of Steel Coin is a tangible symbol of pride, service, solidarity, and union membership. Numbered from 0–99, these limited-edition coins provide a meaningful way for USW members across District 3 to identify and honour fellow members who have dedicated themselves to serving others.

Available now for just $25 CDN, with an additional $20 CDN for tracked priority shipping, these coins make a great recognition item for Locals looking to celebrate members who have worn a uniformβ€”whether in military service or emergency response.

We encourage every Local Union in District 3 to consider purchasing a coin and presenting it to a veteran, first responder, or currently serving member within your Local. It's a simple but powerful way to say, "Your service matters, and your union is proud of you."

Reach out to:

[email protected] - Chair of D3 VOS
[email protected] - Vice-Chair D3 VOS

We also invite all veterans, first responders, and currently serving members to join the growing Veterans of Steel Network. Sign up today and help us continue building a strong community of support, advocacy, and connection:

https://usw.ca/our-structure/district-3/vetsofsteel-network/

Our committee meets every second month on Zoom for approximately one hour, making it easy to stay connected, share experiences, and help shape the future of this important initiative.

Together, we honour service. Together, we build solidarity. Together, we are stronger.

✊ Thank you for your service and your union pride.

πŸŽ‰ Only 10 Days Until Father’s Day! πŸŽ‰

USW Local 9074 would like to remind everyone that Sunday, June 21st is Father’s Day β€” arguably the most important day of the year! (At least that's what the dads in our membership keep telling us. πŸ˜„)

This year, Father’s Day also falls on the Summer Solstice, making it the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. Coincidence? We think not. After all, dads have been stretching a 15-minute hardware store trip into a three-hour adventure for generations.

As you start looking for the perfect gift, we encourage our members to buy Canadian whenever possible. Supporting Canadian-made products helps support Canadian workers, families, communities, and good jobs across the country.

Better yet, consider supporting union-made products and the workers who make them. The Canadian Labour Congress has a great resource to help you find union-made gifts and products:

πŸ‘‰ https://canadianlabour.ca/buy-union/

Whether you're celebrating a father, stepfather, grandfather, father figure, or another important person in your life, we hope everyone enjoys the day.

10 days to go until Father’s Day β€” Sunday, June 21st. Shop Canadian, support workers, and make Dad’s longest day of the year one to remember! πŸπŸ‘·β€β™‚οΈπŸŽ

πŸ“’ USW Local 9074 Members Reminder! πŸ“’

Our final membership meeting before we break for the summer will be held on Saturday, June 13, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Members can join us in person or via Zoom.

These meetings are an important opportunity for us to come together, share information, and strengthen our local. We'll be discussing upcoming events, educational opportunities, community outreach initiatives, and hearing unit reports to better understand what's happening across Manitoba.

Most importantly, these gatherings help us build and strengthen the solidarity that makes our union strong. Every member's voice, experience, and participation contribute to the collective power of our local.

If you would like the Zoom link, simply comment on this post at any time, and we'll make sure you receive it.

We look forward to seeing everyone on June 13 and closing out the season together before the summer break!

✊ Solidarity forever!
