The youngest of three sisters, Benji had always been proactive about her health. When she received a call the morning after a routine mammogram asking her to return for further testing, she was worried. Six weeks later, at just 47 years old, she was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer.
What followed next for Benji was one of the hardest experiences of her life. After surgery to remove the tumour and affected lymph nodes, Benji learned that the cancer had spread. The road ahead suddenly became much more uncertain. Another surgery followed, along with chemotherapy and radiation treatment.
Cancer can have many phases. For Benji, each one brought new challenges and uncertainties. Just two months after completing her own treatment, her sister Leslie was diagnosed with cancer. For Benji this meant supporting her sister through a cancer journey while still recovering from her own.
And in the years since, cancer has continued to touch her family, including the loss of her father and her mother’s ongoing experience with the disease.
