Milestone Moment for Filipino Health Care Aides in Manitoba

Today, we had the privilege of meeting with Minister Uzoma Asagwara, Minister of Health, Seniors and Long-Term Care, and Deputy Minister Scott Sinclair at the Manitoba Legislature.

Special thanks to Michele Lane, Provincial Lead for Health Care Retention & Recruitment Manitoba, for joining us and listening to our community’s stories.

This was more than a meeting, it was a step toward stronger empowerment and support for the vital work Filipino Health Care Aides do every day.

Wellness Tips for Filipino Health Care Aides

1. Hydrate with intention
Your care is essential and so is your hydration. Take small, frequent sips to stay refreshed and resilient.

2. Pause to breathe
Even one slow, deep breath can reset your nervous system and bring calm into the moment.

3. Release the guilt of resting
Rest is not selfish. It’s how you restore your strength to keep doing this sacred work.

4. Acknowledge your feelings
Whether it’s pagod (tired), lungkot (sadness), galit (anger)… or even “ang pogi ko” - name it. Every feeling is valid. Naming it is the first step toward healing (or celebrating!).

5. Protect your energy
Not every fire is yours to put out. Boundaries are not walls, they’re doors to self-preservation.

6. Reach out
A short chat with someone who understands can ease the emotional load. You’re not alone.

7. Ground yourself
Carry a small prayer, a stone, or a memory, something that reminds you of who you are beyond the uniform.

8. Celebrate small victories
Every smile, every comforted elder, every task completed is a win. Honor these moments.

Caring for yourself is not a luxury - it’s how you sustain the care you give to others.

You are essential. Your well-being matters. Your presence is powerful.
