10 ways I see dogs die in Manitoba
Based on my experience as a rescue director with Save A Dog Network in Manitoba for the past 13 years. This is not official data or in any order.
1. Hit by vehicles
2. Parvo (diarrhea/vomiting)
3. Dog shoots used as animal control
4. Deliberate human violence, including beatings, stabbings and machete attacks
5. Complications during birth
6. Freezing
7. Untreated infections
8. Mauling by other dogs
9. Wolf attacks
10. Starvation
Other causes I’ve seen as well include severe parasite infestations, poisoning, distemper, bowel obstructions, and drowning. They often die before I can get them so this is based on community members telling me and the dogs I help in Manitoba. Often it’s a combination of these issues as well.
Too many of these deaths could be prevented with human intervention or prevention all together. Access to responsible pet ownership education, vet care, funding, shelter, food and humane dog management can really change the course of our future.
