So happy to see this! ❤️

Dr. John Embil knew my Dad, Dr. David Crawford, and Dad always spoke so highly of him — not only for his medical expertise, but for the kind of person he is: funny, caring, highly energetic, and deeply committed to helping others.

I first met Dr. Embil as a young girl and later had the privilege of working with him professionally as a nurse in the hospital, where he was regularly consulted for his expertise in infectious diseases. I also had the opportunity to learn from him at his wound clinic at the Health Sciences Centre.

Reading about the Embil Family Bursary for Parents with Children, and the many ways Dr. Embil and his family have supported medical students over the years, brought a smile to my face. Their generosity reflects a belief that students should be supported — especially those balancing the demands of medicine with raising a family.

Dad was once one of those students, graduating from the University of Manitoba College of Medicine in 1987 when I was just 2 years old.

For that reason, establishing a future scholarship that supports mature students at the University of Manitoba Max Rady College of Medicine is one of the long-term goals of the Dr. David Crawford Memorial Fund.

We lost one of our Cathedral giants in the storm, as so many of us did.

Our tender-hearted son was quite upset when he saw her fallen and asked that we lay some flowers. He also asked me to write a poem for her and gave me the opening line.

We are grateful that more damage wasn’t done, but I know we are not alone in our grief for this beauty. These trees are part of our shared landscape, our memories, and our sense of place.

There is something deeply human about mourning them.

The big strong tree,
As old as she was tall,
She gave us shade in summer,
Amber beauty in the fall.

She weathered every winter
And gave us hope each spring.
We will miss her presence dearly—
The birds, the bugs, the neighbours sing.

We grieve the trees we lose to storms,
To drought, to blight, disease,
To the brash, upward-and-onward march
That fells them with such ease.

These elders who live among us
Become our quiet friends.
The loss of our gentle giants
Leave wounds difficult to name and impossible to mend.

A headstone stump where they once stood,
A gap against the sky.
The earth remembers what was there,
And so, it seems, do I.

The tender heart can scarcely tell
Circulating blood from sap;
When they are gone from their familiar place,
We hold a grief not all can grasp.

As a family physician, Dad dedicated his life to caring for others. Seeing support from Manitoba’s medical community for an event created in his memory is incredibly meaningful to us ✨

As part of Run 4 Your Cause, we’ll be gathering to celebrate Dad’s legacy, support North End Students & future prostate cancer research, AND bring our community together! We’re so excited, but we could still use a few more volunteers to help make the day run as smoothly as possible!!!

Today, as I was leaving my counselling appointment at CancerCare Manitoba Patient and Family Support Services, I was greeted by their annual Pride parade and, in true Dad fashion, I joined right in 😂🌈💗

Dad was always happy to celebrate 🎉

I don’t think he ever attended a Pride event, but since I carry him with me everywhere, he made it to this one 💗

Thank you to CancerCare Manitoba for providing counselling and support, and for continuing to create safer, more inclusive spaces for patients and families.

It’s always a special visit when we come to St. John’s High School 🐯

Today I had a tiny assistant with me who was a little shy, but very happy to visit Grampy’s old school nonetheless. ❤️

We were incredibly excited to share that proceeds from the Dr. David Crawford North End Perogy Supper, along with art sales and a late donation, brought our total fundraising amount to $3,250!! 🤩

Thank you to the St. John’s Alumni Association for continuing to support the fund and its mission. And thank you to every single person who attended, donated, volunteered, shared the event, purchased artwork, or helped spread the word!

It wouldn’t have been possible without you! 💗

We hope to see many alumni, friends, family, and community members at the Dr. David Crawford Memorial Run on June 14 happening in partnership with and the association.

And later this June, we will proudly present the second Dr. David Crawford Memorial Fund Award to a graduating St. John’s High School student pursuing post-secondary education in the health sciences!
