Gunnvor was a member of the Jon Sigurdsson Chapter IODE for many years...she will be missed by all.

With heavy hearts, we mourn the passing of Gunnvör Daníelsdóttir Ásmundsson, our beloved 101st Fjallkona, who passed peacefully on Christmas Eve after a brief illness.
Gunnvör immigrated to Canada from Iceland in 1970 and devoted her life to preserving and strengthening Icelandic language, culture, and community. She played a vital role in countless organizations, taught Icelandic to generations of learners, and helped establish enduring traditions such as the Icelandic Language and Cultural Camp, Þorrablót in Winnipeg, and the Kvennahlaup. A longtime contributor and board member of Lögberg-Heimskringla, her commitment to our publication and community was unwavering.
In 2025, she received the Laurence S.G. Johnson Lifetime Achievement Award from the Icelandic National League of North America, honouring her extraordinary service and dedication.
We extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, and all who were touched by her remarkable life. Her legacy will live on in the communities she so lovingly served.

Today the Jon Sigurdsson Chapter held its Annual Christmas Luncheon at the Scandinavian Cultural Centre in Winnipeg. The festive occasion was hilighted by the celebration of member Deanna Isliefson's 45th year as a member. Over the years she has served in so many capacities including Vice- President and President. Congratulations Deanna!💥
A second highlight was having Jo Wilson, 106, our longest member, attend with her granddaughter, Diane, current President; great-grandaughter, Pamela; and great-great granddaughter, Olivia!
Kerrine Wilson played the piano and led us in Christmas carols!
Best wishes to all during the Holiday Season☃️🎄

In 1923 the women of Jon Sigurdsson Chapter collected the names and bios of over 1500 veterans of Icelandic descent in World War I from across North America and published a book entitled "Minningarrit Islenzkra Hermanna 1914-1918.
In 1980's the next generation of JS IODE were encouraged to do the same for those who served in World War II, publishing "Veterans of Icelandic Descent World War II" in 1990. The video by Susan Hjalmarson features a few of the soldiers pictures. Lest We Forget.
