Science careers rarely follow a straight line, and Dr. Deb Court talks about that perfectly in this week’s Micro Minutes. From summer research experiences to decades of work in molecular genetics and mitochondria, her story is such a good reminder that curiosity really does take people far!

Thank you Dr. Court for sharing your experiences, advice, and research journey with us! 🌙🧬🔬

For this edition of Micro Minutes, we had the opportunity to hear from Dr. Denice Bay, Associate Professor at the University of Manitoba, about her experiences in research, mentorship, and antimicrobial resistance.

Dr. Bay shared thoughtful insights on the realities of working in science, the importance of strong mentorship and hands on learning in the lab, and why pursuing work you are genuinely passionate about matters so much in research. Her perspective was both honest and inspiring, especially for students still exploring where they see themselves in STEM.

A huge thank you to Dr. Bay for taking the time to share her experiences with the MiSC community! 🧫🔬

What is one of the things you can do with a Genetics degree? This episode might help 🧬

Genetic counseling is the perfect blend of the science of genetics with real clinical and patient care 💉

We’re joined by Jessica Hartley, the program director for U of M’s MSc in genetic counselling AND a genetic counsellor herself to talk all about the career. We cover what it is, what the career looks like, and how students can get into it.

We also dive into the real side of the profession, including how genetic counsellors help patients navigate complex and sometimes difficult decisions.

A must-listen if you’re exploring what other options are out there for careers beyond the lab 🎧

Still cannot believe MiSC received TWO awards from the Science Students’ Association to close off the 2025-2026 year.

- Best New Event for our MiSC Society After Hours Gala
- Best EDIA Initiative Award for the MiSC Society Podcast

These awards mean so much to us because both of these initiatives were created with the intention of building stronger connections within the science community and creating spaces where students could feel welcomed, included, and genuinely excited to be involved.

The MiSC Society After Hours Gala started as just an idea to make networking feel less intimidating and more personal, and seeing it recognized as Best New Event is honestly so special to us. The same goes for the MiSC Society Podcast, which was created to highlight student voices, research, experiences, and conversations that are not always talked about enough within science spaces. Receiving the EDIA Recognition Award for something built around openness, community, and creating more accessible conversations within science honestly means so much to us! 🩵

This is a fun one 🙌

In Episode 7 of the MiSC Society Podcast, we’re joined by Chris Rathgeber, someone every student who has taken Microbiology is familiar from first and second year labs. 🥼 🔬

We dive into what its like having students in a lab for the first time with everything from Bunsen burners and bacterial cultures to the chaos, confusion, and learning curves that come with being a new science student. 🔥

Along the way, we share some of the funniest and scariest moments from Chris’ lab experiences! 😱

Whether you’re in your first year or looking back on it, this episode is a reminder that everyone starts somewhere, and that you’re definitely not alone in the process. 🌟

From giving students a platform to share ideas, and supporting initiatives like ours, UMFM truly makes a difference on campus. The MiSC Society Podcast would not be possible without their support, giving students like us the opportunity to share ideas, have conversations, and build something of our own.

During Pledge-O-Rama 2026, UMFM is raising funds to keep the radio platform going, and to keep supporting student voices on campus.

If you’ve enjoyed listening to us, this is your chance to give back and support the space that made it possible.

🎙️ A little different from our usual episodes…

For Episode 6, we had the opportunity to join UMFM 101.5 during their Pledge-O-Rama week, where we flipped the roles and got interviewed about our own podcast journey.

We go behind the mic to talk about how the MiSC Society Podcast started, what inspired us, and what it’s been like building this platform as students.

Huge thank you to UMFM and Jared for having us and supporting student voices like ours 💙

For this week’s Micro Minutes, we’re featuring Dr Jim Davie, a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Medical Genetics, whose decades of experience in science and research offer a unique perspective on how the field has evolved 🔬✨

With over 40 years at the University of Manitoba, Jim has witnessed firsthand the rapid advancements in epigenetics, from a time when histones were overlooked to now being central to understanding gene regulation and disease.

💡 Key takeaway: Stay open-minded, be critical of what you read, and remember that science is always evolving. What we know today may change tomorrow.

His insights are a reminder that curiosity, adaptability, and passion are key to a long and meaningful career in science.

Stay tuned for more Micro Minutes each week 👀

🎙️ EPISODE 5 – The Reality of Research

This week’s episode is all about undergraduate research, just in time for anyone starting summer research soon!

We break down what research is actually like as an undergraduate student, from how to get involved to what happens once you’re in the lab.

We talk about our own experiences, the highs, the failures (lots of them), and everything in between.

If you’re getting prepared for research this summer, this is the episode you need 🎧
