For 40 years, conservation in Manitoba has been carried forward by people who believe this work matters.

As part of celebrating our 40 year history, we’ve started sitting down with some of the individuals who helped establish MHC, shape its direction, and carry it forward today. Their stories reveal how far we’ve come and why this work continues.

In the months ahead, we’ll be sharing more voices from across MHC, including our habitat conservation specialists, experts and partners working on the ground to protect the landscapes that define this province.

We are excited to bring you the stories of 40 years in the field, told by the people who made it possible. Stay tuned!

But consider yourself lucky if you ARE being watched by one of these little owls!

Eastern screech-owls can be tough to spot! Their bark-like feathers help them blend perfectly into tree trunks, and being only about the size of a robin (although a bit chunkier), they’re easy to miss!

They depend on mature trees, quiet spaces, and healthy habitat to survive. By protection natural landscapes across Manitoba, we can help ensure these guys always have a place to rest, hunt, and of course blend into the background as they (maybe) watch you.

We are 40! 🎊

This year, we are celebrating 40 years of conservation across our province. Since 1986, we’ve worked alongside landowners and partners to protect the grasslands, wetlands, forests, and waterways that make this province what it is.

To mark the milestone, we’re rolling out a new 40th anniversary logo and launching a series of stories and projects that look back on where we’ve been, and ahead to what’s next. Needless to say, 2026 will be busy!

We’ve shared more about the anniversary and the thinking behind the new logo in our latest web story - check it out!

We recently brought the whole MHC team together in Portage La Prairie for our winter all-staff gathering. Part celebration, part review, part looking ahead.

We recognized long-serving staff, shared organization-wide updates, and kicked around new innovative ideas as we solidified our approach to 2026.

We also presented our Director of Conservation, Kurt, with a miniature Dr. E. Brown Enterprises van, containing an even more miniature Delorean. “Why?” you may ask. It’s a trade secret.

Big thanks to the people who’ve been carrying MHC’s work forward and helping shape where we’re headed next!

Do you ever find yourself sitting deep in thought wondering… is that a Downy or Hairy Woodpecker? It’s a question as old as time itself.

They share many similarities, but size and bill length give them away! Downy Woodpeckers are smaller, with short, stubby bills whereas Hairy Woodpeckers are larger, with longer, dagger-like bills.

SO, which one do you think is munching at this suet feeder? 👀

MHC Mythbusters is here (minus the explosive experiments and moustached hosts, sadly).

Conservation work can feel confusing, especially when an organization has evolved as much as MHC has over the years. Let’s set the record straight and bust some myths along the way.

First things first - and this is a biggie - in 2021, MHC transitioned from a Crown corporation to a not-for-profit! While we are proud of our history and how our organization has evolved, this is a fact that many folks don't realize - so now ya' do!

Catch you on the next Mythbusters post, maybe we can blow something up that time(we won't)!

Big bird, big impact.

The striking Pileated Woodpecker is hard to miss in the wild. Beyond their looks, they play a major role in ecosystems by carving out large nesting cavities in trees. This creates habitat that dozens of other species rely on long after the woodpecker has moved on!

So next time you hear that unmistakable drumming, remember to thank a Pileated Woodpecker (especially if you happen to be a bat, or a squirrel. In which case, impressive you're using social media).

A little winter wildlife highlight for you. Meet the Black-capped Chickadee, Manitoba’s unofficial ambassador of winter bravery.

They don’t migrate. They don’t hide. They tough it out (just like us, begrudgingly sometimes). These tiny birds survive our coldest winters by lowering their body temperature at night and hiding food in hundreds of secret spots.

If Manitobans were a bird… this would be the one.

A few weeks ago, we were able to spend time at the Canadian Land Trust Summit in Victoria, BC. We joined conservation organizations from across the country to learn, share, and connect while surrounded by people who care deeply about conservation in Canada.

The sessions were inspiring, the conversations were awesome, and we came home full of new ideas, and excited to continue strengthening land conservation here in Manitoba. The landscapes around the summit were stunning and while vastly different from Manitoba, they are equally shaped by the people working to protect them.

Huge thanks to Alliance of Canadian Land Trusts for bringing Canada’s conservation community together.

PVWD met with some of our funders yesterday, including staff from Manitoba Habitat Conservancy's GROW program, Manitoba Association of Watersheds and the Province of Manitoba, giving us the opportunity to strengthen our relationships and showcase some of our projects!

Meet the American Redstart, one of the flashiest little warblers in Manitoba.

With males in bold black and orange, and females in soft grey and yellow, these birds put on a show during spring and summer. They flick and fan their tails to flush insects from leaves, a signature move that inspired their name: "redstart" means "red tail” in Old English! (Bonus language fact, they’re often called ‘Little Candle’ in Latin America). Spot them near wooded wetlands, which is the habitat they rely on to nest and raise young.

Swipe to see the stunning contrast between male and female (but both are equally fierce foragers)!
