It was a beautiful evening to be out on the La Salle River. Perfect temperature and just enough breeze to keep the mosquitoes away. The river is still clear of duckweed at the launch and water weeds further upstream.

Just a reminder: in August and September, outings leave the shore at 6:30pm, and return at 8:30 or sunset (whichever is earlier).

Wonderful evening to be out on the La Salle with 15 other paddlers. It was hot (40+ humidex) and considered cancelling because of the temperature/humidex but insisted everyone have water and keeping track of how people were doing.

Another beautiful evening to be out enjoying the La Salle river with new friends and old (10 boats). The temperature cooled a little, with just enough breeze to keep the mosquitoes away (mostly).

Next Wednesday is the last in July, and the last launch at 7:00. Starting in August, we will be leaving at 6:30pm to allow for additional time before sunset.

Paddle Manitoba extends its sympathy to the family, rescue personnel and volunteers following the recent drowning event at Sturgeon Falls on the Winnipeg River.

It has brought forward the conversation regarding risk and safety in the outdoors. Mick Lautt, a longtime member of the paddling community, offered some thoughtful insight on CBC Radio recently:

It was an amazing evening to be out on the river with 13 other boats (canoes and kayaks). Beautiful temperature, only a slight breeze, and no rain. Thank you to everyone who came for a paddle.

The river has dropped substantially over the last week, and the current has also dropped. There is very little duckweed, algae, or water weeds right now.

We had an inquiry looking for info from anyone that has paddled the Hayes River in a high water year like this year.

Is there a paddler out there familiar with these conditions on that river?

More of Nopiming is opening up...

Wildfire recovery work on backcountry campsites continues in Nopiming Provincial Park. The first four campsites on the Seagrim Lake Chain are now open. Crews are now working on the Bird River-Elbow Lake route, with a projected opening later in July.

Transport Canada’s Navigation Protection Program administers the Canadian Navigable Waters Act.

In accordance with requirements of the Canadian Navigable Waters Act, Canadian Pacific Kansas
City, hereby gives notice that an application has been submitted to the Minister of Transport for work on the Carberry bridge over the Assiniboine River using barges as platforms and sediment curtains.
