Community Living - Manitoba

Community Living - Manitoba We do this through strengthening families, defending rights, and transforming communities into places where everyone can belong.

Community Living Manitoba's vision is an inclusive Manitoba in which people with an intellectual disability are valued equally and able to participate fully in all aspects of society. The Manitoba Association for Community Living is a registered charity leading the way to building an inclusive Manitoba for individuals with an intellectual disability. We value INCLUSION and believe everyone benefit

s by being included in all aspects of society. We RESPECT individual choices made by people with intellectual disabilities and work with them to promote their individual rights and dignity. We model INTEGRITY by building relationships based on honesty and trust and hold ourselves accountable to the people we serve. We develop WISDOM by seeking knowledge and feedback, learning from our experiences, and strive to make decisions through collaboration.

A People First member said:
"I don't want to just live in my community. I want to belong there. Accessibility means I don't have to fight so hard just to be included."

Accessibility is about more than getting through the door. It is about being welcomed, valued and included. Everyone has the right to make choices and build relationships. Everyone has the right to take part in and be part of community life.

Inclusion Canada
·
People with disabilities should not be living in an institution, whether large or small.
People with intellectual disabilities and their families should have the supports they need to live fully inclusive lives in the community.
We invite you to access our newly updated resource document - The Right Way. This document is a guide on the right way to close institutions and the right way to create independent living options in community with the right resources and appropriate support to make it successful.

“I lost 18 years of my life to an institution. But I don’t concentrate on that. I concentrate on what I can change. “- Peter Park, Ontario

Peter is one of thousands of survivors of institutions. Survivors helped write The Right Way so no one else has to live through that harm again.

Closing institutions matters — but how we do it matters just as much.

You can make a difference by reading and sharing The Right Way: www.institutionwatch.ca/the-right-way/
