Save Our Seine is an environmental non-profit organization that seeks to protect, enhance, and advoca

THE GOALS OF SOS

- Preserve, protect and enhance the natural environment & heritage resource of the Seine River
- Restore & repair features of the environment that have been degraded
- Improve water level, flow & quality
- Raise the public’s awareness of all aspects of the Seine River
- Improve the environmental behavior of private industry, governments and the general public. Improve appropriate public access along the Seine River (by low-impact nature trail & by canoe)

THE ROLE OF SOS

- To monitor the Seine River environment
- To act as a critic/advocate
- To be an instigator of projects (initiate projects to be carried out by others)
- To be a proponent of projects (initiate projects to be carried out by SOS)
- To act as an ‘expert resource’
- To carry out and promote ongoing public education

A VISION AND PLAN FOR THE SEINE RIVER

The plan is composed of a number of components. An outline of the components is as follows:

- Establishment of a protected natural corridor
- Restoration of the river
- Restoration of the riparian environment
- Establishment of a Seine River development authority
- Completion of an urban nature trail and canoe route, the length of the seine
- Establishment of a public education component

Meet the Geocachers: Hunting for Treasure, Tackling Buckthorn!

In 2026, Save Our Seine welcomed some wonderful new volunteers to the Kavanagh Park land-care crew. Members of the local geocaching community have beenrolling up their sleeves to help remove invasive European buckthorn and restore the park’s natural habitat. To learn more about the group, what brought them to Kavanagh Park, and what motivates their volunteer work, we spoke with Ryan Cowtun, President of the Manitoba Geocaching Association.

Getting started with geocaching is easy, and best of all, it’s free!

All you need is a smartphone and a sense of adventure. Simply download the Geocaching app or visit www.geocaching.com, create a free account, and discover the hidden geocaches waiting to be found in your own neighbourhood.

If you’re looking to meet other geocachers, Manitoba has a fantastic community of friendly people who are always happy to welcome newcomers. Attending a local geocaching event is a great way to meet others, ask questions, and learn a few tips and tricks. You can find any events on Facebook at Manitoba Geocaching Association or mb-geocaching.com.

You don’t need any experience to get started. Just bring your curiosity, enjoy the adventure, and who knows where your next treasure hunt might take you!
Want to get outdoors, meet some great people, and make a real difference for the Seine River Greenway? Join the Kavanagh Park land-care crew for some hands-on buckthorn removal! No experience necessary, just a willingness to lend a hand.

SOS closed our 2026 planting season with a fantastic community effort! On October 18, 60 volunteers from Access Credit Union, Lake of the Woods Brewing Company, and Save Our Seine planted 23 American basswood (linden) trees and more than 280 native flowering shrubs at Lagimodière-Gaboury Park, including red-osier dogwood, nannyberry, and highbush cranberry.

These plantings will provide food and habitat for pollinators, expand our urban forest, support wildlife, and strengthen the health and biodiversity of the Urban Seine River Greenway.

Special thanks to Access Credit Union Access Credit Union for its generous financial support and Lake of the Woods Brewing Company Lake of the Woods Brewing Co. for providing lunch and take-home b**r gift packs. A great day, an amazing crew, and a lasting contribution to the Greenway!

Join Save Our Seine and Bike Winnipeg for a guided ride along the Urban Seine River Greenway. Discover one of the chilliest, simplest and most pleasant ways to get from the south Seine all the way to the confluence of the Seine and Red Rivers at Lagimodière-Gaboury Park!

Along the way, we’ll stop at sites throughout the Greenway to talk about the work Save Our Seine and our partners have been doing to keep the Urban Seine River Greenway healthy, accessible and connected. It’s a chance to explore the trails, discover some great cycling routes, and see the Seine from a whole new perspective.

We’ll finish off the ride with a stop at Kilter Brewing!

Location: On the trail by the Hindu Temple & Dr. Raj Pandey Hindu Centre, where the South St. Vital Trail crosses St.Anne’s Road

Fishing for All on the Urban Seine River!

Free for all! No equipment or fishing licence needed! Free take-home tackle! Win prizes!

TIME: 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Location: Lagimodière-Gaboury Park - just off the parking circle at the Shoal Lake Aqueduct Plate.

Perhaps you’re a seasoned angler looking to connect with others fishing on the Urban Seine River, or maybe you have always wanted to catch your first fish? Join Save Our Seine and the Manitoba Wildlife Federation on Thursday, October 8th for a fun, family-friendly Fishing for All workshop at Lagimodière-Gaboury Park.

Open to everyone, this free session welcomes anglers of all experience levels, while providing beginners with the skills, equipment and support they need to get started. Learn basic angling skills, try out equipment, meet local fishing experts, connect with other Seine River anglers, and discover more about fish ecology in the Urban Seine River.

Bring your own gear or share the equipment provided. Bait is included, no fishing licence is required, and participants will receive free take-home tackle to help get their fishing kit started courtesy of Bass Pro Shops. Attending the workshop enters you into a draw for one of 2 Bass Pro Shops® King Kat Rod and Reel Spinning Combos or one of 4 Bass Pro Shops Extreme Utility Boxes!

The Seine River is home to an incredible diversity of fish species, including northern pike, catfish, walleye, shiners, dace, and many more. Fishing is a wonderful way to connect with nature, spend time outdoors, and experience the Urban Seine River Greenway from a whole new perspective. Come fishing, meet other anglers, learn something new, and learn to love the Seine even more!

Join us for the final workshop in the Becoming a Good Relative Workshop Series!

Looking closely at the insects and small beings whose quiet work holds this Bois-des-Esprit together. Your guide Brandi Vezina will be joined by Dr. Danielle Nowosad, they bring Indigenous knowledge and western ecological science together and ask what our smallest relatives can tell us about the health of the land and the river.

Feel free to drop in, open to all ages. Bring a water bottle and dress for the weather and uneven ground; they walk is at an easy place with places to stop and rest.

We’ll meet at the Bois-des-Esprit entrance closest to John Bruce Park, along John Bruce Road.

Fall migration is on its way, and that means new opportunities to see and hear birds moving through the Urban Seine River Greenway!

Join Mackenzie Glover from the Manitoba Important Bird Areas Program for a free guided birding walk through Lagimodière-Gaboury Park. We'll explore the river corridor together, look and listen for migrating birds, and learn more about the birds that depend on urban natural spaces like the Urban Seine River Greenway.

Whether you're an experienced birder, just getting started, or simply curious about the wildlife around you, everyone is welcome.
