Thank you to Opaskwayak Health Authority for inviting NIDA on the first Friday of May, where we came together in community to recognize National Indigenous Diabetes Awareness Day (NIDAD) a day dedicated to raising awareness about the impact of diabetes among Indigenous Peoples and the importance of wellness, prevention, and reclaiming traditional foods.
Thank you to Chief Michael G. Constant for coming out to support the event.
Throughout the day, participants had access to education and supports including information on gestational diabetes, risk factors, foot care, retinopathy, blood sugar and blood pressure checks, and guidance from a dietitian.
150 participants joined us in learning, sharing, and supporting one another. Congratulations to Louise Wastesicoot, the winner of the bike prize package (helmet, lock, and water bottle).

It is with deep sadness that the National Indigenous Diabetes Association (NIDA) learned of the passing of Gail Stup.

In 2020, Gail was awarded the National Indigenous Diabetes Association’s Caroline Daigneault Diabetes Shkaabe Award, an honour that recognizes individuals who have served as an inspiration to others through persistent excellence, meaningful efforts, and positive impact.

We remember Gail with gratitude, respect, and deep appreciation for all she gave. ❤️

In 2020, Gail Stup was awarded NIDA “Caroline Daigneault Diabetes Volunteer” to honour her as an inspiration. At IDHC, Gail led Traditional Practitioner services and was advisor. As a vision-impaired person, Gail reviewed IDHC resources to ensure IDHC remains AODA-compliant.
