Stopping Human Trafficking Takes a Community!

Human traffickers look for places where they can operate unnoticed. Strong, informed communities can make that much harder.

Our FREE, practical resources to help short-term rental owners and managers recognize trafficking signs, strengthen prevention, and know what to do when something does not seem right.

We have worked with a variety of cities, counties, regions, and police forces across Canada to bring these resources into communities and help more people understand the role they can play in preventing human trafficking.

Education and collaboration are critical. When communities know the signs and understand how to respond, we create safer spaces for everyone.

Are you interested in bringing these resources to your community?

Together, we can make it harder for traffickers to operate unnoticed.

Could your short-term rental be used for human trafficking without you knowing?

A recent Globe and Mail story is bringing important attention to a reality every short-term rental owner, manager, and host should understand.

Traffickers can use short-term rental properties because they may offer privacy, anonymity, and limited interaction with property owners.

But awareness can change that.

Knowing the warning signs, paying attention to unusual activity, and taking simple preventative steps can make your property less attractive to traffickers and help protect people in your community.

That is why we developed a free resource package specifically for short-term rental owners, managers, and hosts.

It includes practical information to help you:
✔️Recognize possible signs of human trafficking
✔️Identify suspicious booking and guest activity
✔️Take steps to deter traffickers from choosing your property
✔️Know what to do if something does not seem right

You may never expect human trafficking to involve your property. Being informed can help ensure it does not.

Download the free resource package today at

Please share this with a short-term rental owner, property manager, or host. The more people who know the signs, the harder it becomes for traffickers to operate unnoticed.

💙 Selkirk, you showed us what it means to take action!

What an incredible way to wrap up our three in-person Joy In Action events for the summer!

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who joined us in Selkirk this past Saturday! To our amazing participants, dedicated volunteers, generous donors, sponsors, and community supporters, your enthusiasm, encouragement, and commitment made the day unforgettable. 💙

This summer, from Steinbach, Brandon to Selkirk, you’ve helped make this a summer of movement, awareness, connection, and hope. Every step, every conversation, every dollar raised and every person who showed up helps support the work of The Joy Smith Foundation and our commitment to safer communities across Canada.

You can still support a participant with a donation up to September 30!

But Joy In Action isn’t over just yet! 👟🌎

Our Virtual Joy In Action is still going strong! There’s still time to join the movement from wherever you are in Canada. Walk, run, move, fundraise and take action in your own community while supporting this important work.

MYTH: Human trafficking only happens somewhere else.

FACT: Human trafficking happens in communities across Canada.

Awareness helps people recognize warning signs and know where to seek support.

Learning the facts is one of the most powerful tools we have to help prevent trafficking.

It was a pleasure to meet with Member of Parliament Rachael Thomas after she reached out to discuss human trafficking in Canada and the importance of keeping children safe online.

The online world is changing quickly, and traffickers are changing with it. Social media, gaming, messaging apps and other digital platforms can all be used to identify, target and groom children and youth. Keeping pace with these tactics is an important part of prevention.

Ending human trafficking takes all of us.

We are committed to working with leaders from all political parties, along with law enforcement, governments, communities and organizations across Canada, to strengthen online safety, prevention and education.

Thank you for the thoughtful conversation about how we can better protect children and build safer communities across Canada.

If your teen uses Snapchat, here’s an update worth knowing about.

Snapchat has added new safety limits for younger teens. Users ages 13 to 15 can now only share Spotlight posts with people they follow back, rather than with the general public. Teens under 16 will also see fewer public engagement features on Stories and Spotlight.

It’s a positive change. But settings and safety features only go so far.

Keep talking with your kids about who they connect with online, what they share, and what to do if something or someone doesn’t feel right.

Knowing the apps your kids use and keeping those conversations open can make a real difference.
