Manitoba International Folk Dance Association :: M.I.F.D.A. Recreational folk dances from around the world. Beginner friendly dancing. No partner needed. We encourage you to participate!

We are an informal group of fun-loving international folk dance enthusiasts. There are easy dances as well as more challenging dances, slow and fast dances, but our group is open to everyone and no experience is required. Our dance repertoire ranges from all over the world, including dances from Greece, Macedonia, Turkey, Israel, India, Romania, Bulgaria, Armenia, Croatia, Russia, Portugal, France

, Canada, and the British Isles, and even a dance from Polynesia! Many of the dances are done in one big circle; others are done with a partner; and others are 'mixers' where you keep changing partners; and we even have a few lively line dances. The music of these dances is also part of the pleasure we have while folk dancing. Some you will find hauntingly beautiful, or will thrill you with its exoticism, or just exude such joy and happiness... hearing music from all over the world is definitely an integral part of the international folk dance experience.

This video does a great orientation to how to contra dance.
Those form only a small part of our repertoire, but the tips about giving weight are relevant for many of our dances. So is the fact that the musical phrase contains clues as to what will happen next, although with international dances coming from a variety of traditions, the count may vary.

After 2 decades, we said goodbye to the space at Churchill Park United Church. We've appreciated using their spacious gym all these years and wish them well with their renovations.
Starting this week Friday, we'll be meeting at St. Paul's Fort Garry Anglican Church.
Join us in Fort Garry.

This Friday is our last night dancing at Churchill Park United.
We'll be on the third of three evenings teaching Tamzara.
Tamzara is the name of a grouping of 9/8-metre dances that were originally for weddings but have become popular for any event.
Tamzaras are is closely related to the Yalli dances of Azerbaijan which are UNESCO-listed as intangible cultural heritage.
The version we do came from Tom Bozigian via our workshop with Rick King in 2018.

Teaching dance this week: Maple Leaf Rag
The "Maple Leaf Rag" (copyright 1899) is an early ragtime musical piece composed for piano by Scott Joplin. It was one of Joplin's early works, becoming the model for ragtime compositions by subsequent composers. It is one of the most famous of all ragtime pieces. Its success led to Joplin being dubbed the "King of Ragtime" by his contemporaries.
